Despicable Me 4 is now streaming, and there are a variety of reasons that it is worth watching. The 2024 movie premiered in theaters on July 3. Its debut was followed by a VOD premiere on August 6, which was less than halfway through its landmark run that has led it to become the third highest-grossing movie of the year so far behind Deadpool & Wolverine and Inside Out 2 (which is the highest-grossing animated movie of all time). However, the sequel has not been available on any free or subscription streaming platforms until now.

Everything kicked off in 2010 with the original Despicable Me, which introduced Gru (Steve Carell), his adopted daughters, and the Minions to the world. It became the ninth highest-grossing movie of that year, spawning a sprawling franchise that now includes four installments in the flagship series, two installments in the Minions spinoff franchise, the Minions 3, a multitude of short films, video games, theme park attractions, merchandise, and more. It also kickstarted the box office reign of the studio Illumination, which has since gone on to make other animated hits including The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Sing.

As of October 31, Despicable Me 4 is finally on streaming. It is now available on Peacock, NBCUniversal's streaming service. Now, all four Despicable Me movies are available to stream on the platform, as Despicable Me 3 arrived on October 30. While the spinoff movies are available elsewhere (Minions is on Netflix while Minions: The Rise of Gru is on Prime Video), the entire flagship series is available to all subscribers of Peacock. The service offers multiple subscription tiers, ranging from $7.99 a month for the basic package and $13.99 a month for the ad-free Plus.

One reason to check out the new movie on Peacock is the star-studded Despicable Me 4 cast, which includes returning stars Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig (as Gru's Anti-Villain League compatriot and wife Lucy Wilde), and Miranda Cosgrove (as their adopted daughter Margo). Also on hand are franchise newcomers such as Will Ferrell (as the villain Maxime le Mal), Sofía Vergara (as Maxime's girlfriend Valentina), and Joey King (as Poppy Prescott, a young girl who dreams of being a villain).

Despicable Me 4 also stars Stephen Colbert, Chloe Fineman, and Steve Coogan.

The Despicable Me 4 soundtrack also continues the franchise's longtime collaboration with Pharrell Williams, who has written songs and themes for the movies since the original installment. This includes Despicable Me 2's smash hit track "Happy," which was the single that spent the most weeks at No. 1 throughout 2014. The standout track from the new movie is "Double Life," a jaunty tune that celebrates the two faces of the reformed villain Gru.

The return of the Minions also offers a heavy dose of their signature slapstick humor, this time amplified by a group of superhero Minions who are created by an experiment that takes place midway through the story.

What Screen Rant has said about Despicable Me 4:

Its ability to stay light on its feet helps keep the excitement going, making for an entertaining viewing experience. Newcomers to the franchise, most notably [Will] Ferrell and Sofía Vergara... fit in perfectly... The action is zippy, enhanced by energetic animation that fits the franchise's style. - Despicable Me 4 Review

Although it did not become a billion-dollar movie itself, it helped push the franchise past a major box office milestone.

Minions and [Despicable Me 3] both grossed over $1 billion.

By the end of its run, Despicable Me 4 had pushed the cumulative theatrical grosses of the Despicable Me movies past the $5 billion mark. This was able to happen because it ed the second installment and Minions: The Rise of Gru in grossing more than $900 million, while Minions and the third installment both grossed over $1 billion.
