Destination X star Josh Martinez may have a ton of reality TV experience under his belt, but winning Big Brother and appearing on The Challenge seems to have had nothing on the newest reality TV competition he's a part of. While Josh has appeared on some of the most grueling reality TV competitions on the air, Destination X was a whole new challenge for the star. The new geo-guesser series completely cuts its contestants off from the outside world, isolating them and giving them glimpses of the outside world in order to help them understand where the X they are.
Hosted by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Destination X season 1 appears to have some of the most exciting elements of travel reality TV shows, giving the competition a new spin. Viewers will have the opportunity to see the show's competitors, who will eventually include The Bachelor and The Traitors star Peter Weber and Love Island USA season 6's JaNa Craig, working through challenges to figure out where in the European landscape they've landed. With pre-existing knowledge only helping so much, Destination X will provide its competitors with an exciting puzzle to solve, though only one will take home the $250,000 prize.

20 Best Reality TV Shows Right Now
Reality TV is more popular than ever. With so many to choose from, here are some of the best reality TV shows to stream or watch right now.
As a reality TV veteran, Big Brother 18 win, where he was able to irritate and annoy the rest of his fellow houseguests by banging together pots and pans while singing a generic circus theme song all summer long. While Josh has matured a fair bit since his appearance on Big Brother, having moved through several seasons of MTV's The Challenge in the process, he's ready to show a new side on Destination X. Excited about the new show finally hitting the air, Josh sat down to chat with Screen Rant about Destination X.
Screen Rant: Alright Josh, we have seen you on other reality shows - this one's a very different game. What did you find intriguing about Destination X?
Josh Martinez: That it was completely different from anything else that I've done. I think once I got reached out and I heard the format, first off I was very excited because it was NBC, and I think NBC is where you want to be at now as a competitor and a TV personality. Everybody, all the cool kids are running over there [laughs] so I just felt very excited once I saw that email and once I had a call.
But then from there, just the format, it's nothing like you've seen on TV before. It's completely different from anything else I've done. I've been locked in the Big Brother house, I've competed on challenges, jumped off of buildings, but I've never been confined on a bus trying to figure out where the hell I'm at. So instantly, my adrenaline junkie crazy stuff was like, "sign me up and just throw me in there already." So yeah, I was really, really excited for it.
Screen Rant: You mentioned being locked in the Big Brother house. You've competed on Big Brother, The Challenge, but you've grown up a lot since we first met you in the reality TV space. What version of Josh are we seeing on Destination X?
Josh: I think the crazy side of just all of it is that I think to my core, I'm still Josh. I'm still chaotic and emotional and extremely ionate, but I think I've grown up a lot. I've started this when I was 22, I'm 31 now. So, you guys have kind of seen me grow up. I'm hoping you see a little bit more mature side, but that hotheaded Latin blood that runs through me, and that fire that I have, that competitiveness is just who I am and who I'm wired as. So, it's kind of hard to try to control that, especially when a lot of money, $250k is on the line. That - I wouldn't say aggressive, I would say ionate - competitiveness definitely is going to come out, and you're going to see all sides of Josh like you always do, that's for sure.
Screen Rant: That's what you want to see, honestly, a well-rounded competitor. What skills were you able to bring in from your past experiences? Obviously this is a really different competition, a really different environment, but what have you learned in the past that really helped you here?
Josh: I think to be honest with you, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. While it was very exciting, it was a little scary. I was expecting to see more [veteran reality TV stars but] being the only vet, I just knew socially I'm able to connect with people. I'm a very sociable person. I'm an extroverted individual. I can talk to a wall. So I know that in these games, building relationships is huge, and that was my main focus.
I didn't know the game that I was getting into, but I was like, I can navigate relationships and connect with people. So I think that'll be my upper hand. And I think just being able to adapt, I've been thrown in so many different scenarios within challenges. Every season is different, and I think I've just been able to adapt to the game. I'm able to adapt to a quick pace, like a fast-paced game. So, I think that that was going to help me, and I think also just traveling, I've traveled the past eight years. I haven't stopped traveling. [laughs] Like, even right now, I'm in Spain on a trip with my family. I would say I'm also very skilled with my European geography. I just felt pretty prepared, but then I had truly no idea what the hell to expect.
Screen Rant: That seems like a good leg up, a good way to start things out. You spoke about walking into chaos, and having a strategy when things are unknown in a game is tough, but did you have a social strategy going into the game?
Josh: Oh, 110%. A skill that I've picked up through the years and all these games that I've done is being able to read people and just understanding people. I think instantly I was like, all right, who's going to be my threat? And I just saw the way that certain people were moving. For example, Rick [Szabo], Rick was bouncing around that bus [laughs]. Like he was, I mean, the guy was good, but I'm like, I've seen this one too many times - I know what you're doing. You're trying to build a rapport with everybody. You're getting information. And he was kind of, right off the rip, a very strong player that stood out to me. So I was like, do I want to work with this guy, or do I want to target him? And I guess you guys will see how that unfolds.
I was just like, just being able to read people in the way that they move, and especially in these games, people get anxious, people get nervous, people gravitate towards other people. So just being able to kind of read the room in this case, read the bus, something that I felt like was my strong suit. I think also just, like I said, you really had no idea what to expect. You never knew when Jeffrey was going to throw a clue or the windows were going to go up and, you know, we were going to be able to see outside for split seconds. So, you just had to be on your toes. I think that I'm able to adapt pretty quickly.
Screen Rant: In of the bus, I was very surprised to see the bus [laughs]. How did you feel about that experience? It really gave old school Road Rules, but I was like, this is a very interesting element. Were you surprised getting on the bus?
Josh: Oh, I was so excited. You kind of see my reaction in that first 20 minutes that they show, but I was really excited when I saw the bus [laughs]...nine hours into the bus ride, I understood that this was going to be my reality for the next few weeks. So I was like, something that I realized about myself is that I can't be confined.
I don't do well with tight spaces, and I didn't know this until I got on that damn bus. [laughs] You very quickly have to get very comfortable with these people because we're sleeping on this bus. You're literally sitting right next to each other, morning breath, whatever, like in your face, you know? You can't run anywhere. I don't think [the show's] going to do it justice for how it felt in there. One day felt like a week, three hours felt like 10. So, I think relationships and connections formed instantly.
Screen Rant: Yeah, at least with Big Brother you had like the backyard. This is really just...bus.
Josh: Oh hell yeah [laughs], I would do Big Brother a million times. Don't get me wrong, I would probably do Destination X again, too, but yeah, like I didn't realize how good I had it until I was locked on the bus and I was like, oh, this is no joke. That was the hardest part for me, really, just getting used to it. It felt like a never-ending road trip, and I mean, I go stir crazy. You're going to see it. I go nuts.
Screen Rant: Obviously you can't spill too much on the competition, but what can we expect just from you in of your more personal gameplay? You said you went stir crazy, do you feel like you had any really intense moments?
Josh: Uh, from the moment I stepped foot on the bus [laughs] Yeah. I mean, you're going to see it all. You're going to see everything that you'd expect from me when I'm on a TV show, [that's] what you're going to get on Destination X. I think that I can't go as much as I want, so...I'm like trying my best, and I'm in my healing era right now, trying to work on myself...but I can't help but to like...when I see some shady s**t, to call it out. I think that happens within episode one [laughs].
That, and I'm a friendly person. You're going to see me connect with some people, not connect with others. I think that you're going to see, even not myself, just everyone in general. I think this cast [is incredible], truly, NBC killed it. It's such a unique cast, everybody's so different, but everybody brings something to the table. Everybody in their own way is some sort of threat either socially or, you know, with certain skill sets that they came in with. So I think that this group, this dynamic is just going to make for great TV. I'm getting chills even saying that, like I got chills [laughs]. I'm really excited for the fans to see it. I'm really excited for them to see me and how it plays out.
Screen Rant: I definitely agree, it's such a fun concept. Final question for you, if you had to describe your experience in three words, what would they be?
Josh: [pauses, then laughs] I was about to give you a spoiler, but instead I'm going to say, I mean, there was so many highs, so many lows, but it was like throwing a bull in a China shop. Like I just went absolutely bonkers, but I had the best time. It was truly one of the best experiences. It's definitely, out of all of my TV projects, a very unique one. I'm very happy that I did it, and just be prepared to see Josh be Josh...'cause it's going to be fun.
Destination X premieres Tuesday, May 27 at 10 p.m. EDT on NBC.
