Showtime's Dexter: Original Sin is a prequel to their popular aughts hit, and now the blood-soaked origin story has been renewed for a second season. Developed for the small screen by Clyde Phillips, Original Sin chronicles the early days of Dexter Morgan (now played by Patrick Gibson) as he begins his career with the Miami Police Department. Recasting many of the original show's recognizable characters, the series aims to explain just how the notorious serial killer came to be, and what happened in the decade before the events of the original series.
Following the somewhat disappointing release of Dexter: New Blood in 2021, the franchise spawned from Jeff Lindsay's novel seemed like it was over for good. However, Showtime suddenly announced a prequel series and, not long after, also revealed a continuation, Dexter: Resurrection, with Michael C. Hall. While the latter is still a ways off, Original Sin looks to breathe new life into the franchise as it rapidly expands in the 2020s. This all culminates into a season 2 renewal for Dexter: Original Sin, and Showtime clearly has big plans for the prequel series.

Dexter: Original Sin Season 2 Is Confirmed
Showtime Has Renewed The Show For Another Season
With another spinoff coming soon, it's clear that Showtime has big plans for the Dexter franchise. As such, it wasn't particularly surprising when the network opted to renew Original Sin for a second season in March 2025. The news came down around a month after the season 1 finale, but little is currently known about the impending sophomore outing. Production details are expected to arrive in the coming weeks, but the larger Dexter franchise makes it somewhat difficult to speculate about a release window.
2026 would be a logical window for Original Sin to return, but nothing has been officially announced yet.
While a yearly release schedule would be preferable, it isn't necessarily very realistic in the modern TV landscape. Dexter: Resurrection is forthcoming as well, meaning Showtime might want to stagger the releases of each of its new Dexter installments. 2026 would be a logical window for Original Sin to return, but nothing has been officially announced yet.
Dexter: Original Sin concluded on February 14, 2025.
Dexter: Original Sin Season 2 Cast Details
Some Characters Are Guaranteed To Return
Since the series is a prequel, there are certain of the cast of Dexter: Original Sin who are almost certain to return because they appeared in the original series. Even though some retconning has happened in the prequel, a major premature character death probably won't happen. Anyone who doesn't appear in Dexter is fair game though, and there aren't really any guarantees that they'll survive Dexter's earliest murder spree. Speaking of the eponymous character, season 2's cast will be led by Patrick Gibson as young Dexter Morgan.
Likewise, Christian Slater should be back as Dexter's father, Harry, and Molly Brown will be back to reprise her role as the younger Morgan sibling, Debra. Michael C. Hall returned in the prequel's first season to narrate Dexter's inner monologue, and he'll probably be back to do it again. Dexter's new co-workers like Maria LaGuerta (played by Christina Milian), Angel Batista (James Martinez), and Vince Masuka (Alex Shimizu) all appear in the original series, so they're a shoo-in for Original Sin season 2.

Dexter's Massive New Morgan Family Retcon Completely Changes The Original Show, 18 Years After The Premiere
The premiere of Dexter: Original Sin introduces a new retcon about the Morgan family's history, which changes a major basis of the original show.
Dexter: Original Sin Season 2 Story Details
An Entire Decade Of Evil To Explore
Since the prequel is set in the year 1991, there is more than a decade of time that Dexter: Original Sin could explore. However, the finale of season 1 also set the stage for a direct continuation of the story going into season 2. Having disposed of Aaron Spencer in true Dexter fashion, the title character has begun his path toward becoming the cold-blooded killer seen in the original series. This also begins a bit more of the twisted relationship between Harry and Dexter, the former of whom approves of the latter's actions.
Meanwhile, Deb made the decision to forgo college in favor of a career in law enforcement, a key moment in the Morgan family timeline. She will undoubtedly go through her own series of trials and tribulations in season 2, and those conflicts could intersect with Dexter's rise in the Miami Metro force as well. Dexter's season 1 promotion is also another step toward him becoming the Bay Harbor Butcher seen in the original series. Dexter: Original Sin has the potential to become a long-running series, and Dexter's twisted past is an untapped well of exciting stories.
