Teen dystopian dramas are certainly a popular genre of film, and it's no secret that Divergent often get stacked up against each other. Each with a leading heroine, there is a lot of similarities between these suspenseful and dystopian series.
Of course, it's not hard to see why Jennifer Lawrence's Katniss Everdeen and Shailene Woodley's Beatrice "Tris" Prior are such famous characters. With strength, independence, bravery, and intelligence, these two heroines are fan favorites - and most fans probably have their preference. So, it's time to settle it - with reasons why Tris is the ultimate heroine of her genre, and why Katniss Everdeen might just be even better.
Beatrice Prior: She's Practically Fearless
While she doesn't exactly have only four fears like her lover in the series, Beatrice has only seven - and that's pretty crazy. She doesn't fear much, and that makes her one of the bravest and most remarkable heroes of the genre.
It's one thing to have fears, but Tris also knows how to overcome hers and not let them control her. She looks her fears straight in the eye - and that's definitely impressive.
Katniss Everdeen: She Knows When To Have Courage
There's an age-old saying that blind courage is just stupidity, and Katniss Everdeen certainly proves this is true, giving her a one-up on Beatrice Prior. Katniss is actually afraid of a lot of things, and she never pretends to have no fears.
Rather, she judges when she should be brave, and also, when she should be hesitant. Rather than blindly leaping into dangerous situations, this heroine is much more willing to think about the next step and all of its possible outcomes.
Beatrice Prior: She's Selfless
If there's one thing that is simultaneously Tris' biggest flaw and biggest asset, it's her selflessness. Rooted in her Abnegation genes, Tris acts almost strictly out of the needs of others, and honestly, rarely puts herself first.
She sacrifices herself more than once, and while it's not always the 'smartest', it is undoubtedly the most selfless thing she could have done. Her dedication to the greater good makes her one great dystopian heroine.
Katniss Everdeen: She Fights For Herself - Not Love
Katniss' entire story definitely comes out of love for her sister, but she doesn't exactly ever give herself over to romantic love. Where Tris' powerful feelings for Four often make her situation a bit sticky, Katniss is never blinded by love.
She cares deeply about both Gale and Peeta, but she also knows what the best thing to do is - and doesn't always lead with her heart. This is far from a female trope, and fans love that about Katniss.
Beatrice Prior: She's Reliable & Responsible
While this might seem like a lame reason for Tris to be one of the best heroines of teen dramas, it separates her from many other characters of the genre, especially when it comes to female heroes.
Katniss is a bit unstable, and she relies on mentorship and her friends to keep her grounded in her quest. On the other hand, Tris relies on her friends, but she is outstanding in her own right. She rarely lets her emotions cloud her vision - and she always has her feet firmly on the ground.
Katniss Everdeen: She Stays True To Herself
Both Tris and Katniss struggle with their morals, identities, and values throughout their stories. However, Katniss finds more of herself than Tris does. While Tris lives and dies for those around her, Katniss does not sway from who she believes she is.
She makes sacrifices, but she will continue to be her own self - and that means resisting the Captiol and all of its lavish material goods. She never buys into what she 'should' want or do, and that makes her stronger than ever.
Beatrice Prior: She's A Fighter
If there's one thing any fan would bet money on, it's that Beatrice Prior would certainly beat Katniss Everdeen in hand-to-hand combat. However, this is moderately unfair, since Katniss' weapon of choice is a bow and arrow.
Of course, Tris would likely still come out on top, because she has Dauntless in her blood. She is calculative, observant, scrappy, and masterful with or without a weapon. She's an incredible symbol for a strong female character.
Katniss Everdeen: She's Patient
While Tris might knock Katniss off her feet, Katniss succeeds because she is patient. During the games, it's hard to say if Tris would win - because she is all about action. She might find herself ing up with Cato and the rest of the career pack.
On the other hand, Katniss uses her strengths to her best advantage, and she knows when to strike. Rather than rushing in blindly, she waits for the strong-headed to fight each other, and then uses her best assets. This is what allowed her to win the games.
Beatrice Prior: She's A Leader
Where Katniss Everdeen leads by accident, Tris leads on purpose. She is confident and intelligent enough to lead with conviction. Not only do people trust her, but it's fair to say that anyone would probably listen to Tris in a dire situation.
She always knows what's up, and somehow, she seems to always know what the best thing to do is, and how to do it. In a crisis, Tris is the leader most fans would choose.
Katniss Everdeen: She's Fiercely Independent
From the very beginning of Katniss' story, fans know that she provides for her family, and is able to barter with people and survive on what she is given. From then to the games, she remains most confident in herself. While she struggles to rely on others, this only shows how independent she is.
Sure, this could also be a weakness as times, but her self-sufficiency is what allows her to win the games and overthrow the Captiol. If Tris didn't have her friends, it's hard to say she could have done the same. Plus - Katniss' independence makes her a fierce role model and heroine.
