According to Marvel's advanced solicitation, Doomed 2099 #1 will feature the latest test of present-day Doctor Doom's reign over the Marvel Universe, which will come from some of the most legendary figures from Marvel's myriad future timelines. The synopsis for the issue reads:

The world is Doom's…but does that include the world that is yet to be? A coalition from the future – including Old Man Logan, Rachel Summers, the Phoenix, Bishop, Cosmic Ghost Rider, the Maestro and Deathlok say otherwise. But will the arrival of Doom 2099 change the odds for the new Sorcerer Supreme? Is he there to back his past self… or destroy him forever?

The collective appearance of these characters will be a thrill ride in its own right, but what has immediately sparked fan speculation is the synopsis's intriguing question of whether Marvel is bringing Doom 2099 into play as an ally, or antagonist for his mainstream counterpart.

His One-Shot Appearance Should Lead To More

Of course, Marvel's tease that Doom 2099 intends to "conquer the past" seems like a tip of the hand that he will, in fact, be an antagonist for present-Doom, while writer Frank Tieri added some intriguing context to the speculation. In Marvel's announcement of Doomed 2099 #1, Tieri is quoted as saying:

Is Doom 2099 looking to become the new Sorcerer Supreme? Or is his mission much more disturbing than that? I think fans will be surprised at the answer.

Particularly curious is his use of the word "disturbing" here, suggesting the issue may very well serve up a twist on Doom 2099's role that no reader will be able to predict.

Very quickly, Marvel Rivals has turned Doom 2099 from a niche version of the infamous villain, beloved by comic book fans, but mostly unknown to a wider audience, and made him into a fan-favorite. The character's return to comics, following on the heels of the game's success, was inevitable, and Doomed 2099 promises to use the character in an engaging, entertaining way; moreover, this can be expected to be just the first of a renewed slate of appearances for the future Doctor Doom.
