Doctor Odyssey season 1 ended with no major cliffhangers, leading to speculation that there might not be a second season. Popular talk show host John Oliver used a Last Week Tonight segment on May 18 to question why the network had not yet given a renewal, stating "What the f-k are you doing, ABC?"

Per THR, during a red carpet interview posted on X, Jackson responded to Oliver's comments, stating that, if he were more proficient on Instagram, he would have posted the quote everywhere. He then went on to comment that, even if the show did not receive a season 2 renewal, he would be fine for his career to end right there and then, because he was delighted with the badge of honor that came with making it onto the John Oliver show. Check out Jackson's quote and the video below:

“If I was more proficient at Instagram, I would have plastered that everywhere. I should probably still do that because thank you, John Oliver. Whether they pick us up or not, I kind of feel like my career can end now because I got a shout out… like I’ve made it now that I made it on the John Oliver show.”

What This Means For Doctor Odyssey's Future

Oliver's Plea Highlights The Cultural Impact Of The Show

Oliver's plea for a renewal shows the cultural impact that Doctor Odyssey has had as a show, and that it has crossed over into the realm where celebrities unrelated to it are praising the series. This can only be a good thing with regard to convincing ABC to greenlight season 2, and Jackson seemingly recognizes this. He understands the importance of what this means, and his tongue-in-cheek comments about ending his career on a high with Oliver's reference also show the influence the talk show host has on US television culture.

There are plenty of reasons for optimism with regards to Doctor Odyssey getting a season 2 renewal, and Doctor Odyssey's strong cast will be key for the future of the show, and helping to develop interesting story arcs long-term.

Doctor Odyssey season 2 has a good chance of a renewal, especially as medical dramas tend to have strong legs on network TV, not to mention a positive endorsement from someone like Oliver can only be a positive. The show seems to have struck a chord with viewers, and if the series can continue to reinvent itself, there is scope for long-term success. It is uncommon for someone like Oliver to be so vociferous in his praise of a show, and this is surely going to influence ABC's decision to give the series a renewal.

Our Take On Doctor Odyssey Season 2

The Show Has A Lot Going For It

Doctor Odyssey's Season 2 Renewal Chances Lie Entirely On 1 Person, & That Doesn't Make Any Sense

There are plenty of reasons for optimism with regard to Doctor Odyssey getting a season 2 renewal, and Doctor Odyssey's strong cast will be key to the future of the show, and help to develop interesting story arcs long-term. Max is front and center, but fan-favorite characters like Tristan can help to shape storylines in season 2, and beyond. Nothing is confirmed by way of a renewal yet, but the fact that Doctor Odyssey season 1's ratings topped Grey's Anatomy, means that a renewal is likely.
