The Marvel Cinematic Universe has done a fantastic job of adapting some of the famous locations of Marvel Comics onto the big screen. The Savage Land has thus far been absent, but there's a huge possibility that it could be showing up within the Multiverse in some capacity in the future.
There's so much more to know about the lore and mythology of the Savage Land, outside of the dinosaurs that inhabit this area lost to time. What exactly is the Savage Land, why is it untouched by the outside world and who are its defenders? Marvel fans may need to know these details before heading into Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness.
Origins
Although it seems as if the Savage Land is an area that simply never aged, staying within the pre-historic era of the Marvel Universe, there's some alien interference that has come to define the origins of this mysterious region. It was the species known as the Nuwali that created the Savage Land.
The idea is that it would be a game preserve for the Beyonders, who took great interest in the species that resided on Earth. It was conservational in its effort, although as the biosphere globally collapsed the Nuwali came in to introduce further diversity so that this dangerous area could continue to prosper.
Location
Although the Savage Land could have been presented within the Multiverse or perhaps in a different dimension, which may happen within the MCU, the location of this region is actually on Earth. Traditionally prehistoric areas are located within the center of the Earth or cut off from the rest of the world.
For Marvel, the gorgeous and scenic Savage Land is placed in Antarctica, in a region that should in theory be uninhabitable. It's not at all easy to find at the base of the Palmer Peninsula, but its clever coordinates mean that there's a lot of surrounding natural cover, hiding it from normal tracking technology.
Diverse Species
The Savage Land still boasts an incredible diversity of flora and fauna. There is some evidence that nothing has changed in of the remaining pre-historic beasts that roamed the Earth, but there are additional plants and animals added to this line-up, as well as humanoid-like species.
There are plenty of peoples alongside these dinosaurs, including Ape-Men, and other animal-based hybrids like Fish-Men and Lizard-Men. These various communities live in harmony, although there are conflicts based on territory as well to contend with occasionally.
The Protectors
There have been various protectors across the history of the Savage Land. The most famous of them are Ka-Zar, Shanna, their son, and their pet Sabertooth Tiger Zabu. They have chosen to permanently live within the Savage Land and correspond with Earth's heroes.
They have fought alongside and against the people of this scary location and have come to learn about its various quirks and traits. If there is a chance of survival in such a volatile landscape then these are the heroes that someone would want to rely upon. They have a great appreciation for the nature there and help to protect the diversity of the region.
Connection To The Savage Land
After death, both Ka-Zar and Shanna have forged a much deeper connection to the Savage Land. While once they were just people living within this secret hideaway, they now have a genuine bond to the land itself. They can feel its ever-changing biosphere and even boast some control over the region.
Communicating with some of the species better and understanding the plant life in a larger capacity, their powers only really work within the Savage Land but they are vital for the continued prosperity of an area constantly in flux.
The Secret Invasion
The Secret Invasion was an event that featured the rise of the Skrulls, who had infected every aspect of Earth, planting sleeper agents in some high-powered positions. The battle to force the alien invaders off of the planet was intense and largely took place in the Savage Land.
Crashing in this hidden region, the conflict was kept there for the large part so that the heroes could decide who was real amongst themselves, limiting the loss of human life. Of course, this angered Ka-Zar who was fearful of the damage it could do to the Savage Land itself.
Biotechnology
In the most recent run of the comics, audiences have come to understand the impact that biotechnology can have on the Savage Land. While Ka-Zar and Shanna utilize man-made tech in conjunction with nature to create environmentally sustainable biotech, that has been taken to the extreme.
The duo is fighting off against mutations within the system, that use far more complex biotech to try and change the very fabric of the Savage Land. It can have a very damaging effect, although there is a notion that balance can be found somewhere. This concept could be explored further on-screen in the future.
Previous Inhabitants
There are plenty of powerful beasts within the Savage Land and other species who have inhabited the area for centuries. While Ka-Zar and Shanna might be the main family living here currently, others have previously called the Savage Land home.
The Eternals once found themselves living amongst the people of the area, learning from this incredible preserved landscape. The Atlanteans have also come to appreciate the natural beauty of the area, although now have mostly returned to Atlantis. Even the X-Men have tried to use it as a base in the past. All of these connections could be forged as the MCU expands.
International Interest
There's a lot of international interest in the Savage Land. It boasts a wide array of natural resources and some believe it's another area where Vibranium could be found. Even in the context of the flora and fauna, there's probably a lot of money to be made.
The United Nations have decreed that no one should interfere with the region, because of how special it is. Shanna and Ka-Zar have continued to act as representatives on the global stage, understanding how they can communicate the struggle of a region in such a delicate balance.
Appearance In The Trailer
The Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness trailer hinted that the Savage Land may be making a brief appearance in the film. In the footage released America Chavez and Doctor Strange himself fall through a portal in the Savage Land, before a T-Rex launches itself at them.
With the brief image, it appears that the area will stay pretty faithful to the source material. It's an exciting location for fans to explore further but its appearance in the Multiverse is at odds with the idea that it could be hidden in Antarctica somewhere.
