bi-generation - technically a way to have multiple incarnations active at the same time.

There have long been rumors that Ncuti Gatwa was leaving after Doctor Who season 15. That meant a regeneration was on the cards, and - amid speculation about the show's future - there had been debate online about whether we'd get to see the Sixteenth Doctor. In the end, we did; and the Sixteenth Doctor is a very familiar face indeed.

Billie Piper Seems To Be The Sixteenth Doctor

A Surprising Return For A Seasoned Doctor Who Star

Billie Piper as the Sixteenth Doctor in Doctor Who

Billie Piper is apparently the Sixteenth Doctor. A celebrated pop star, Billie Piper's big acting break came in 2005 when - appropriately enough - she played the part of Doctor Who companion Rose Tyler. Although Rose technically left at the end of season 2, she would return several times throughout that first Russell T. Davies era. Piper even appeared in the Doctor Who 50th anniversary special under showrunner Stephen Moffatt, with a Time Lord superweapon taking on her likeness.

Doctor Who season 15 appears to end with Billie Piper becoming the Sixteenth Doctor. However, it must be noted that the credits are rather unusual; they normally say "Introducing X as the Doctor." This time, the credits acknowledge that both Ncuti Gatwa and surprise returning star Jodie Whittaker played the Doctor, while simply adding "Introducing Billie Piper." The difference seems rather pointed, but it's unclear what it means.

The BBC's press release appears to indicate there's a story of some kind going on here. "Billie once changed the whole of television, back in 2005, and now she’s done it again," showrunner Russell T. Davies observes. "It’s an honour and a hoot to welcome her back to the TARDIS, but quite how and why and who is a story yet to be told. After 62 years, the Doctor’s adventures are only just beginning!"

Why Has The Doctor Taken On Rose Tyler's Face?

There's Definitely Some Significance To This

Piper is not the first actor to appear on the show in another role before being cast as the Doctor. This technically first happened to Colin Baker; he originally played a Gallifreyan guard, before getting the starring role. Still, the example of Peter Capaldi is much more well-known; he appeared as a Roman during the episode "The Fires of Pompeii." Capaldi's return actually became part of the story, with the show revealing the Doctor chose this face to remind himself he was a man who should save others.

It would make sense for the Doctor to still have baggage over Rose.

It's likely there is a similar story reason for Billie Piper's return. Russell T. Davies' current Doctor Who era has often explored the idea that the Doctor is traumatized by his past; bi-generation was initially portrayed as a strange form of therapy, but it's become clear the scars are still there. The Doctor was head-over-heels with Rose Tyler; she was the one he loved and lost (even if she did wind up living with a human duplicate). It would make sense for the Doctor to still have baggage over her.

What Is Billie Piper's Future In Doctor Who?

We Don't Know What's Next For Doctor Who

Ncuti Gatwa's regeneration in Doctor Who

The future of Doctor Who has seldom felt more uncertain. The show was almost canceled during Christopher Chibnall's time as Doctor Who showrunner; it's an expensive show to make well, and the BBC struggled to find Chibnall's replacement to boot. Russell T. Davies ultimately returned as showrunner, and the BBC struck a valuable co-production and worldwide distribution deal with Disney+. But that partnership has come to an end after two seasons and an spinoff, meaning the future is unclear.

Still, Doctor Who is one of the BBC's biggest franchises - and a significant moneymaker through global distribution and merchandise. Even if the BBC's partnership with Disney+ does break down after the spinoff The War Between The Land And The Sea, it doesn't necessarily mean the show will be canceled. Rather, the BBC may well instead choose to explore other options.

Assuming Doctor Who is renewed in some form or another, we don't know how long Piper would be on board as the Doctor. This could be something similar to David Tennant's brief return for three specials at the beginning of the Disney+ partnership. That would certainly fit with Davies' hint that there's a story purpose behind this latest regeneration, one that will be explored in detail. Ultimately, as is always the case with Doctor Who, only time will tell.
