With Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor and Archie Panjabi's the Rani set to face off in rogue Time Lady known as the Rani has warped the Earth into a strange new realm.
Ahead of the universe-bending events of "Wish World", Davies teased to Doctor Who Magazine (via RadioTimes) just what the first chapter of Doctor Who season 15's finale has in store for the TARDIS team and audiences alike. The showrunner teased that alongside a recontextualization of the relationship between the Doctor and the Rani, dating back to their youth on Gallifrey, and how it shaped them, the episode will also give new context behind the events of season 14. Check out Davies' full explanation below:
It takes some very unexpected turns... There are big surprises, from the Doctor and for the Doctor. Some of it shakes up the lore of Gallifrey. Some of it re-contextualises the Doctor, the Rani, and their relationship. Elements from [season 14 premiere] The Church on Ruby Road are even paid off. It's rewarding for long-term fans but exciting for new viewers as well.
What "Wish World's" Story Could Mean For Doctor Who's Lore
New Links May Be Added Between The Two Time Lords
While it has never been put to screen, the Doctor and the Rani's history has been documented within Doctor Who's extended media. Childhood friends on Gallifrey, the pair went through the traditional trials every young Time Lord must go through, eventually finding themselves enrolled at the Prydonian Academy. Together, the pair were part of the rebellious collection of students known as the Deca, but would eventually find themselves leaving Gallifrey, albeit for drastically different reasons.
With this in mind, it is likely that Davies' story may add details that will diverge from the expanded media, just as how he used the introduction of the Untempered Schism, a tear in reality that all children of Gallifrey are forced to peer into as part of their initiation to explain the Master's descent into villainy in season 3. Doctor Who Unleashed's preview for "Wish World" teased a long-brewing rivalry between the Doctor and the Rani, with the latter feeling she could turn the Doctor. As such, the showrunner may be adding new details to their childhood.
Our Thoughts On Doctor Who Season 15's Potential Gallifrey Retcons
Not Every Revelation May Be As It Seems
While Davies has teased an immediate shake-up of Doctor Who lore in "Wish World", the very nature of the episode's premise may make what is true and false hard to decipher. Between the Doctor and Belinda being made into a domestic couple and UNIT being rendered a mundane financial advice company, the Rani's new Earth has distorted much of the history viewers have come to expect. As such, not every detail that the Time Lady has influenced may hold the truth.
