Dragon Ball Daima was the last project that Akira Toriyama, creator of the franchise, worked on before his death in 2024. However, even Toriyama's involvement didn't keep Daima from engaging in some massive retcons, affecting both stories taking place chronologically earlier and later than it.

Dragon Ball Daima mostly respected the lore set up in Dragon Ball Z, but the one area where things got very different very quickly was in the origins of Majin Buu, which the series explored. The creation of Majin beings like Buu plays a major role in Daima, with two similar creatures, Majins Duu and Kuu, being created, partially using the essence of the original Buu himself. However, Majin Buu's origins as established by Toriyama were incredibly different from the origin story he was given in Daima, altering a major aspect of Buu's character and creation from what fans thought they knew.

Majin Buu's Origins Have Changed Several Times

Majin Buu's New Backstory Radically Alters What He Is

Originally, in Dragon Ball Z, the Supreme Kai stated that Majin Buu was created by Bibidi, a dark wizard apparently from the Demon Realm. However, in an interview in 2014, Akira Toriyama revealed that this wasn't actually the case. As translated by Kanzenshuu, Toriyama explained, "Though in the manga Supreme Kai said that Bibidi made him, the truth is that one called 'Buu' was not actually created by Bibidi, but has existed since time immemorial. He cycled between rampages and long hibernation." Toriyama claims Bibidi and Babidi merely knew how to awaken Buu.

However, in Dragon Ball Daima, this explanation of Buu's history is altered once again. There, it's revealed that Buu was actually created by a witch named Marba on Bibidi's behalf, who specializes in creating majin creatures and saw Buu as her greatest work. However, Marba is unable to replicate the experiment which resulted in Buu's creation, and needs the essence of Buu to create Majins Kuu and Duu. Marba does so at the behest of Arinsu, and even with only a small fraction of Buu's power, the two new Majin are extremely powerful.

It seems that the idea that Bibidi didn't actually create Buu managed to stick around at least, but Buu is no longer the eternal force of nature he was described as by Toriyama. There are even some moments in Dragon Ball Super which indicate this was the thinking at the time, such as Frieza's warning from his father, saying not to toy around with the likes of Majin Buu or God of Destruction Beerus, effectively putting Buu on the same destructive level as Beerus himself.

Dragon Ball Daima's Buu Retcon Was Relatively Well Received

Fans Weren't Too Upset with Majin Buu's New Backstory

Marba, the witch who created Majin Buu.

While fans can sometimes get bent out of shape over retcons, it would seem, at least, that Buu's new backstory is actually rather popular with fans. Buu being unable to be replicated, for example, explains why unsealing Majin Buu was so important for Babidi--he didn't actually possess the talent or knowledge to create one. Many fans were already skeptical of Bibidi's claim of creating a being as powerful as Buu anyway, especially since he could only barely control it.

It's even possible to merge the two explanations. The Demon Realm, where Marba lives, is much more ancient than universe 7, so it's possible Buu has existed "since time immemorial" while also having been created by Marba. That would, of course, mean Marba herself is unbelievably ancient, but for a powerful magic , even that's not a hard problem to solve. Ultimately, Majin Buu's new origin makes him a more complex character, while undermining Bibidi and Babidi, who weren't well-liked anyway. As such, Dragon Ball Daima's retcon of Buu's origin seems to have been a success.
