Warning: Spoilers for Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 93The Dragon Ball Super manga has been adapting the events of the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero film in recent chapters, but chapter 93 saw it set that aside momentarily to go over Broly's background, finally giving the Dragon Ball Super: Broly film a proper place in the timeline.

The Dragon Ball Super: Broly film released on December 14, 2018, in Japan and 2019 in the US, and was a major success. The film was, unlike many previous Dragon Ball films, said to be the canonical continuation of the Dragon Ball Super TV anime series and did indeed appear to pick up where the anime left off. The manga, however, had begun a new arc, the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga, on December 20, 2018. This led to a conundrum for fans: which story canonically follows the Tournament of Power, the last arc of the TV series?

Dragon Ball Super: Broly Takes Place After the Tournament of Power

Dragon Ball Super Retells the Broly Movie

In chapter 93, Broly is shown via his scenes from Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, before going back to explain who he is and how he got to be there. On page 3 of the chapter, a narration box says that "just after the Tournament of Power, Goku and Vegeta found themselves battling Broly," finally confirming that the events of the Broly film take place in the immediate aftermath of the Tournament of Power in both the manga and the anime. The phrasing indicates that the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga must take place after the Broly film in the manga, clearing up the previous misconception for good.

While the execution of the flashback is a bit lacking, as it condenses the entire Broly film to just five pages, it is good to at last make it clear that the movie is canon to the manga as well as the anime. Previously, the movie's events were relegated to basically a single page in the manga, leaving it unclear just how or why the movie's events happened in the Dragon Ball Super manga. It also opens the door for a potential Dragon Ball Super revival to begin adapting the manga arcs that have yet to be animated, such as The Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga, as the only noteworthy event between them was the Broly movie itself. It also gives a better idea of how much time has ed between Broly and Super Hero, as the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga starts in chapter 43, meaning Broly must be set before that. Super Hero-related content began in the manga in chapter 88, so thus the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga and the Granolah the Survivor Saga took place in the interim.

Fans of Dragon Ball Super are no doubt pleased to be able to lay this particular debate to rest, even if most people assumed its placement correctly.
