In Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, players have the option of reclassing their party into other Vocations. This is done so that players can experiment with new abilities and create incredibly strong characters. Multiclassing characters will make them much stronger than sticking with one Vocation the entire time, as they will have access to more abilities and have higher stats.
Each time a character changes their Vocation, they are reset to level one and their stats get cut in half. However, they retain all the abilities and spells learned from their previous Vocation that they can make use of in their new Vocation. As such, even though they are starting at level one again, they will have much higher stats than a standard level one character that is recruited in DQ3 HD-2D Remake.
How To Multiclass Vocations
Change At Alltrades Abbey
In order to multiclass your party into one of the 10 different DQ3 Vocations, players will need to have made their way to the Alltrades Abbey location. It is located to the north of the town of Baharata, and the main story will take you there in order to obtain Black Pepper for the king of Portoga. Players must reach level 20 in their first Vocation before they are able to multiclass into a different Vocation. I recommend waiting much longer to multiclass, as many Vocations still have plenty of abilities to unlock past level 20.
Waiting to change Vocations will be worth it in the long run, as you cannot change back to your original Vocation without having to level up all over again.
All the Vocations have incredibly strong abilities and spells that won't be unlocked until players reach at least level 40, with some Vocations requiring a level as high as 45. For example, the Gadabout Vocation doesn't unlock its final ability, Channel Anger, until level 45, which boosts all Magic attacks by 50%. In order to make the most of a Vocation change, players should plan what abilities they desire for their party in order to have a fun and strong party combination.
Best Multiclass Vocations
So Many Combinations
There are dozens of different class combinations players can experiment with, some being more effective than others. Dragon Quest 3's Sage Vocation is often considered to be the strongest class in Dragon Quest, which can be freely changed to from the Gadabout Vocation without a Words of Wisdom book. However, Gadabouts are incredibly weak on the battlefield, so be prepared to essentially have a deadweight party member for the first leg of the journey.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake Review: A New Classic Of An Old Classic
Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake successfully introduces a new generation to one of the best RPGs of all time, along with a host of improvements.
The following table has some good examples for which Vocations complement another when switched to:
Old Vocation |
New Vocation |
Ability Synergies |
---|---|---|
Gadabout |
Sage |
Extremely high Luck stat means Sage spells with often land Critical Hits. |
Mage |
Warrior |
A Warrior with a variety of offensive and utility magic that makes them incredibly versatile in combat. |
Thief |
Martial Artist |
Extreme Agility means the Martial Artist can utilize Thief OHKO moves at the start of combat. |
Warrior |
Priest |
A Priest with Warrior abilities that can reliably heal themselves to become a damage sponge. |
Players should ensure that the abilities they obtain from their first Vocation match up well with their second Vocation, or the Vocation change will not be nearly as effective. For example, a Warrior does not have reliable ways to deal elemental damage, which the Mage Vocation can for. The Thief Vocation does not do as much damage as other Vocations, but has an array of utility abilities that can be incredibly useful for a Martial Artist with high Agility. It is quite easy to become incredibly strong, so just let loose and have fun with the party .
Once the player has changed their characters' Vocations, they will have to level them up to catch up with the rest of their party. The upside is that they will level up faster than before and there are quite a few notable locations in order to level them up quickly. The earliest one of these locations is the Tower of Transcendence, located just north of Alltrades Abbey. Metal Slimes can be found here and are in abundance on 5F of the dungeon. Grinding characters can be tedious, but it is well worth it in the end in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake.
