The second-to-last dungeon in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake is the Maw of the Necrogond, a massive cave system where you can find many different items and secrets. This location is split into eight layers, making it a complex dungeon to complete. However, as long as you know where to look, you can quickly move through areas and defeat whatever challenges your party may face.

Since you travel to the Maw of the Necrogond during the late game, you may have high-level party you've helped grow over many adventures. While no specific character Vocation is necessary to beat this dungeon, some are stronger than others. For example, the Sage class in DQ3 Remake is a particularly strong endgame Vocation that excels at defeating foes within the Maw of the Necrogond.

The Maw of the Necrogond dungeon is located southwest of Mt. Necrogond, the large volcano that is very prominent on your map. This volcano is the site where you fight The Garboyle, a tough boss who uses multiple attacks per turn to challenge your party. The Garboyle's use of Inferno makes them a tough opponent, even for veterans of the original Dragon Quest 3.

Once you take down the Garboyle, you can throw the Mountaincleaver weapon into the volcano to trigger a unique cutscene. The eruption of Mt. Necrogond creates a fiery stream of magma that evaporates bodies of water south of the area. This opens up new paths, including the entrance to the Maw of the Necrogond dungeon.

At this point, you should try to save your game and adjust your party combination in DQ3 Remake to group up your best characters before entering the Maw of the Necrogond.

Follow the black ash path from Mt. Necrogond south until you see a new path to the southwest. This route across the overworld will eventually take you to the Maw of the Necrogond, which should also be marked on your map as a location to progress the main story.

The Necrogond Shrine is located at the end of the Maw of the Necrogond dungeon, which has an astounding eight floors for your party to navigate. One of the reasons why the Maw of the Necrogond is such a difficult dungeon is that it's filled with high-level enemies that attack you in large groups. Without healing spells or items, your group can quickly be overwhelmed by simply staying in the dungeon for too long.

Although the Maw of the Necrogond has no bosses, there are several traps you'll have to look out for. One wrong step could send your party down from one floor back to one you've already gotten through, increasing the number of encounters you'll have to deal with. Although some strong spells in DQ3 Remake can make your group invisible to enemies as you explore, this only lasts for a short time.

Here are all the different floors in the Maw of the Necrogond and the best strategies to get through them fast:

B1	Simply walk to the left across the bridge with huge statues, then go up the stairs at the end of the path.
L1	Turn left from this floor's entrance and head south, then continue following this path to the left. Keep going in this direction until you come across the second route that goes south again. Take this path to reach the floor's exit.
L2 (1)	Don't be fooled by the earlier exit to the east on this floor. Just head south until you get to a larger room, then head east and up north to this section's exit.
L2 (2)	Simply travel east until you reach the end of this linear path.
L2 (3)	In this large area, take the northern ladder instead of the southern one, as only one leads the way back into floor L3 after you drop into this space.
L3	When you reach here from floor L2 (1), walk off the ledge to your right to enter floor L2 (3). From there, you can climb up into the northeastern corner of the room, where you can walk east past a shrine to progress.
L4	Starting from the southwestern edge of this floor, go north to the second bridge on this path. Travel across it, then go north again and east once you see a route in that direction. Head south from this path until you can walk along another bridge. Travel along the first eastern path here, then take the first route south that you can. The following trail turns north, going straight up to the exit of this floor.
L5	Walk north across the bridge with statues flanking it, in the same way as you cleared floor B1, to exit the dungeon.

Getting through every floor of the Maw of the Necrogond will see your party come back out into the world, where the castle of the final boss Baramos can be seen on an island ahead. Go to the east to reach the Necrogond Shrine, an area where your team can heal. This is also the place where you get the Silver Orb, the last relic you need in a very long quest related to gathering orbs around the world.

Once you find the Necrogond Shrine, you can easily return to the Maw of the Necrogond to explore it again for treasures you may have missed. Although there are no key items here, there is plenty of equipment in DQ3 Remake you're able to grab here to start preparing against Baramos. One of the best Metal Slime farms is also within this dungeon, making it a great place to help your best party grind for extra XP.

Mythril Helm	L3	Climb the southern ladder on floor L2 (3) instead of the northern one. This will lead to a secluded spot on floor L3 with this item.
3,024 Coins	L3	When entering floor L3, head north to reach a treasure chest with this money inside it.
Death (Friendly Monster)	L3	When entering floor L3, head south to reach this friendly monster you can recruit.

Magical Robes	L4	Across the first bridge east you see going north on floor L4. The chest containing this item is along a narrow northern path.
Magic Shield	L4	At the northwestern corner of the L4 map, on a path north past both bridges.
Magic Water	L4	On the southern path leading to the lower bridge in the center of floor L4.
Mimic (Monster)	L4	Across the upper bridge in the center of floor L4, in an alcove directly south from the bridge after you cross it.
Yggdrasil Leaf	L4	Take the central upper bridge of L4, then take the first path east. Go through the narrow northern tunnel along this route to find the chest with this item.
Thinking Cap	L4	From the eastern path where you find the Yggdrasil Leaf, keep going until you can go south. Take this path, then cross the bridge at its end to find a smaller alcove with the chest containing this item.

Every area in this dungeon is dangerous, so be careful even when you have the Necrogond Shrine to travel back to when exploring.
