Summary

  • Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves sets up a strong foundation for a sequel with its main characters achieving their goal and defeating the villain, leaving room for further exploration.
  • The financial underperformance of the first movie poses challenges for a sequel's budget, but Paramount is considering making a lower-budget sequel without compromising quality.

The overwhelming success of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has certainly warranted a sequel, and here's all the Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 2 news. Well over two decades after Hollywood's first attempt to bring Dungeons & Dragons to the big screen, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves delivered on its promise to explore the realms of the world-famous tabletop role-playing game, and audiences were receptive to its charms. The scope of the Dungeons & Dragons universe has left the door open for the story to go anywhere in a sequel, and the Dungeons & Dragons movies could blossom into a full-fledged franchise on the big screen.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves leaves its main characters in a strong place for a sequel, as they achieve their goal of retrieving the Tablet of Reawakening, with Edgin and his adventure party defeating the Red Wizard Sofina in the process. The movie only touches the tip of the iceberg when it comes to exploring the massive world of Dungeons & Dragons, though, and Dungeons & Dragons 2 could outdo every Dungeons & Dragons movie by including even more of the game's beloved lore. Though no official news has come yet, Hollywood studios can seldom resist a sequel, and there's still enough Honor Among Thieves 2 news to get excited.

Latest Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 2 News

Sophia Lillis on the Uncertain Future of Dungeons and Dragons 2

The most recent Dungeons and Dragons 2 news comes from actor Sophia Lillis, who plays Doric in Honor Among Thieves, has discussed the possibility of the sequel. Sophia Lillis hopes that a sequel to the 2023 Dungeons and Dragons movie will happen but isn't optimistic. When asked about the chances of Honor Among Thieves 2 happening, the actor responded, "I hope so. It was fun to work on, and maybe they’ll make another one, but I think they made a good one by itself. But you know as much as I do, to be honest. I wish I knew more." Lillis' comments aren't wrong, as the movie works as a standalone film, and a sequel isn't necessary.

the 2023 fantasy movie was overwhelmingly positively received, and if it has a great VOD run

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves irably focuses on the narrative at hand without trying hard to set up a sequel, something that other studios can't resist, and that's part of what makes the movie so great. However, that doesn't mean Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 2 shouldn't happen. Lillis added, "A lot of things are up in the air right now … it is very odd, because I’m attached to a few projects, but none of them have funding." While the actor's comments don't seem encouraging, the 2023 fantasy movie was overwhelmingly positively received, and if it has a great VOD run, Dungeons and Dragons 2 can still happen.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 2 Is Not Confirmed

Budget Hurdles Raise Doubts About Dungeons and Dragons 2

Dungeon & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves' box office wasn't overwhelming, but it did see critical success, and audiences who saw it reacted positively. However, Dungeons and Dragons 2 is not confirmed. As reported by Polygon, directors John s Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are not averse to eventually doing a Dungeons & Dragons sequel, even though a franchise was not their intention when starting the project. Unlike other tent pole franchises that set out from the very start to create a never-ending string of sequels, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves shines because it offers a strong standalone story.

the poor box office performance means that Honor Among Thieves 2 doesn't make financial sense

The chances of Dungeons & Dragons 2 are also dampened somewhat by its underperformance in theaters compared to expectations. While it received good reviews and positive word of mouth from fans, the poor box office performance means that Honor Among Thieves 2 doesn't make financial sense. However, following Robbins' comments about lowering the budget for a Dungeons & Dragons sequel, a follow-up is possible. The obstacle now is finding a way to make Dungeons & Dragons 2 with a lower budget that doesn't affect the movie's quality, such as lowering actors' salaries but giving them a percentage of the gross profit.

Paramount+ has a wealth of humanoid races to choose from when it comes time to fill out the cast of their Dungeons & Dragons show.

Dungeons and Dragons 2 could have a smaller budget, as Paramount CEO Brian Robbins explained, "We’ve got to figure out a way to make it for less." Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves made just $208 million worldwide. If the movie was made with $50-60 million, the release would have been a success. However, the 2023 release was made with a budget of $150 million, which meant that taking into the marketing budget, Honor Among Thieves needed much more to break even. To offset the risk of making a sequel, the sequel's budget has to be much lower, but that could also jeopardize the quality of Honor Among Thieves 2.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 2 Cast

Original Cast Essential for Dungeons & Dragons 2's Success

Dungeons and Dragons Honor Among Thieves heroes walking.

Hollywood loves a happy ending, and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves leaves its main characters in a good place to return for a sequel. While they achieved their goal and vanquished the villain, they all also grew and changed throughout the story to become more interesting and well-rounded personalities. For Dungeons & Dragons 2 to be a success, the cast of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves would have to return en masse or else a lot of the original's charm would be lost. Many of the stars of the movie have previously appeared in franchises with several sequels, and there is precedent for their return in the Dungeons & Dragons 2 cast.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is available to stream on Prime Video.

Chris Pine, who stars in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves as Edgin Darvis, is no stranger to sequels as he's appeared as Captain James Kirk in multiple Star Trek movies and Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman and its follow-up. Similarly, Michelle Rodriguez, who plays Olga Kilgore, became a household name as Letty Ortiz in the Fast & Furious movie series and has never shied away from sequels. Even if only Pine and Rodriguez headed up the sequel's cast list, their onscreen chemistry and character development would be enough to preserve some of the magic from Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, though a complete cast return would be best.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 2 Story Details

Possible Villain and Story Arcs for Dungeons & Dragons 2

Nothing has been officially announced regarding Honor Among Thieves 2, and though Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is self-contained, its story doesn't exclude the possibility of sequels either. The ending of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves sees the evil Red Wizard Sofina defeated by the combined efforts of the adventure party, yet her undead black magic gives her an avenue to return again and again in sequels. Even if Dungeons & Dragons 2 was to leave the Red Wizards behind temporarily, the larger looming threat of Szass Tam can't be ignored forever.

The potential Dungeons & Dragons sequel villain was set up in flashback as the Red Wizard of Thay, who first enslaved others using his dastardly magic, and he even spoke to Sofina acting almost like a puppet master. Sofina was bested at the end of the first movie, but the fate of Szass Tam was never explained. Tam could continue to lord over the franchise as an overarching villain, even while the adventurers go on other exciting journeys in the sequels. Dungeons & Dragons 2 could also explore the backstory of Doric more thoroughly, as she was the one member of the party who got the least amount of fleshing out in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
