The latest E3 2018, Dying Light 2 is the ambitious next chapter in Techland's open-world zombie series.
Much has changed from the original 2015 entry, though. Parkour still sits at the center of city navigation, but the developers worked tirelessly to ensure the moment-to-moment movement feels even more seamless than before. Combat received quite the overhaul as well, a promise further bolstered by the sequel's massive arsenal of roughly 200 weapons. While some of the tools at protagonist Aiden's disposal will feel rudimentary at best, Producer Szymon Strauss recently teased that quite a few will prove complex in their design. This attention to detail also applies to Dying Light 2's world design, which has received another tease in the form of a newly released audio story.
The newest look at Dying Light 2 isn't a look, per se. Instead, Techland ed a 10-minute audio story narrated by someone referred to as the Pilgrim. During his travels, the wanderer stumbles into an old church promising him shelter. The folks seem nice enough, but one young man offers a bet the Pilgrim can't refuse - if the younger gentleman can predict the Pilgrim's dream for the night, the latter must give up an axe in his possession. According to a woman who oversees the church, it's a fool's wager since everyone who stays there has the exact same dream. The skeptical Pilgrim accepts regardless, then listens to the woman weave a tale of a young girl named Rosemary who went missing long ago after trying desperately to find her parents. All who aided in the search mysteriously never returned to the church. Treated like a pariah, Rosemary left the settlement without a word, though she now haunts the dreams of those who reside within.
Presumably, this eerie story and others like it will be strewn throughout the open world of Dying Light 2. If so, players have much more than the main campaign and side quests to look forward to in of storytelling, especially if the above proves indicative of the overall quality.
Though the wait has been lengthy, Dying Light's sequel is now only a few short months away. The game resurfaced earlier in the year after a long bout of silence, with Techland regularly showing off more of the project in action. Soon enough, fans will get to dive into the experience for themselves.
Dying Light 2 comes to PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S later this year on December 7.
