Like many of the bosses in Elden Ring, Godfrey the First Elden Lord has a second identity, Hoarah Loux. He takes this name in the second phase of his fight after ripping the lion off of his back and turning into a barbaric warrior. However, the reason behind this alternate identity and the ferociousness of his fighting style may feel unclear when considering Godfrey's renown in the Lands Between even after the Shattering.

Indeed, Godfrey is respected by many of the NPCs in Elden Ring: His portrait can be found hanging in Stormveil Castle, and Starscourge Radahn even modeled his armor after Serosh, the Beast Regent lion on Godfrey's back. But the former Elden Lord is still Elden Ring's first Tarnished, meaning he was spurned by the Golden Order and was forced to leave the Lands Between with his people. In doing so, he left behind his title to Radagon and took to the badlands beyond the mists as nothing but a simple warrior.

This was not before Godfrey fulfilled his duties for Queen Marika, though. Marika appears to have sought him as the first Elden Lord because of Godfrey's reputation as a ferocious and unstoppable fighter. Though becoming a leader amongst the people necessitated Godfrey taking on Serosh to quell his "ceaseless blood lust" according to the Godfrey Icon, he remained a fearsome fighter who destroyed Marika's enemies. However, he lost the touch of Grace after defeating his last worthy enemy - the Fire Giants - and became the first Tarnished. The loss of his title as Elden Lord and the shame this brought him appears to have resulted in him taking on the name Hoarah Loux, where he became a battle-hungry warrior once again according to his Remembrance. While this understanding of Godfrey's downfall may explain why he took on a second name, it does not explain the source behind said name in the way an etymological breakdown can.

The Meaning of Hoarah Loux In Elden Ring

The Elden Ring's Nepheli Loux shares the same surname: Perhaps all Tarnished in the badlands took on this last name in solidarity to remind themselves of their past, or perhaps she is indeed Hoarah Loux's daughter.

The meaning of Hoarah is a bit more direct. Hoarah is likely derived from Haor, the Bengali word for a swampy lake where a lot of natural debris ends up. This could refer to the more desolate nature of the badlands, with it possibly being a more muddy, marshy area outside of the Lands Between. In turn, Hoarah could at once describe the climate and geography of the badlands while noting its history as a land for the exiled. When combined with Loux, Godfrey's second identity could thus potentially mean "the light of the badlands," a suitable title for the fiercest warrior of Elden Ring lore.
