When you first start Each character in Nightreign has a set of unique abilities and considerations. The Duchess is dexterity-based, prioritizing stealth and movement to stay out of enemy reach while delivering devastating strikes at opportune moments. The Revenant, meanwhile, is a sort of summoner, whose main ability revolves around summoning and commanding phantoms to attack alongside her.
These classes are highly specialized, and can be difficult to play, which is likely why they're unavailable to players just starting their Nightreign journeys. That said, they can be an important part of several powerful party synergies, and can be plenty powerful once you learn how to use them. Here's everything you need to do to unlock the Duchess and the Revenant in Elden Ring Nightreign.
How To Unlock The Duchess In Nightreign
Finding The Old Pocket Watch
Thankfully, unlocking the Duchess is a fairly easy process that can be completed from the very early game of Nightreign. You'll first need to complete the tutorial and unlock Roundtable Hold, then set out on your first mission, "Tricephalos." You'll have to survive at least one full day, and when night falls, run to the indicated spot on your map to beat your first boss and obtain the Old Pocket Watch.
I got the Old Pocket Watch after beating the Bell Bearing Hunter, but your experience may vary slightly. Either way, it seems to be a reward for defeating the first boss.
Return to Roundtable Hold and, amid all the celebration, speak to the white-hooded Priestess near the altar. You'll have the option to show her the pocket watch - do so. She'll recognize the watch and tell you that it belongs to her. You'll have the option to "give it to her" or to "keep it." Give the Priestess the pocket watch, and bam - she'll cast her robe aside and transform into the Duchess, whom you've now unlocked.

Elden Ring Nightreign Review - A Sandbox Of Joy And Doom
Elden Ring Nightreign is akin to an "all-stars" imagining of the entire Souls universe, complete with crushing difficulty and extreme elation.
You should get a pop-up with an image of the Duchess that reveals you've unlocked her, and includes a brief explanation of her abilities. You'll also likely see her hanging out by the altar, and can talk with her if you'd like. You can switch to the Duchess (or any other character you've unlocked) by interacting with the bell at Roundtable Hold.
How To Unlock The Revenant In Nightreign
Finding The Besmirched Frame
It appears you can only unlock the Revenant after you've unlocked the Duchess, or at least after you've obtained the Old Pocket Watch. Either way, you'll first have to purchase the Besmirched Frame from the Small Jar Bazaar, located on the west side of Roundtable Hold. It should be located alongside the relics in the shop menu - and can, in fact, be used as one. The Besmirched Frame costs 1,500 Murk, which you can get simply by playing the game.
Now, head to the east wing of Roundtable Hold, and you'll find a ghostly figure staring at a painting. Interact with her while you have the Besmirched Frame in your inventory, and you'll be transported to the ruins of a fort, where you'll face her in battle.
How To Defeat The Revenant In Nightreign
Beating The Revenant
The Revenant is a summoner, so your primary goal should be to avoid or deal with any phantoms she summons. She's not the hardest boss you'll fight in Nightreign, but she does have a lot of allies. This means it's easy to get overwhelmed, surrounded by too many enemies at once, and die before you can do any real damage to her.
However, the Revenant herself is fairly slow and weak. Ideally, you'll want to keep the pressure up on her, especially if you're playing a melee class. As soon as the battle starts, she'll summon three phantoms. Kite them to one corner of the battlefield, avoiding the Revenant's spells. Then, when they're all on top of you, run straight up to the Remnant and start attacking. I found Wylder's grappling hook was pretty helpful when it came to crossing back and forth quickly.

Despite how different the game feels and some of the criticism directed towards it, Hidetaka Miyazaki praises Dark Souls 2 for its innovative views.
As an alternative strategy, you may also choose to play a ranged class like the Ironeye or the Recluse. You can use more or less the same strategy, just striking at the Revenant from afar instead of running right up to her.
Once you've beaten her in battle, though, you can begin playing as the Revenant as well. Switch to her using the bell at Roundtable Hold, just like you would any other character in Elden Ring Nightreign.
