Despite its multiplayer-first format, Each of Nightreign's Nightfarers will have a personal questline, accessed through a new use of familiar Elden Ring items, Remembrances.

New insight from IGN shows how Elden Ring Nightreign will tell its story. Each playable character will have a set of Remembrances to work through, which fill in their backstory and contextualize the onset of Night. While some Remembrances will be text-delivered exposition, others will be playable flashbacks where an NPC can dole out a quest objective which must then be completed on an excursion to Limveld. Certain Nightfarers seem to have unique Remembrances too, like Raider, whose flashbacks can be solo boss fights.

Remembrances Are Used To Play Through Each Nightfarer’s Personal Questline

Story & Quest Progression

Remembrances will be accessed through the Roundtable Hold, via a journal in the library. Some Remembrances will give you an objective that must be completed in the ever-shifting map of Limveld. Each character's Remembrance quests are different, and the objectives also change depending on the Remembrance. IGN uses an Ironeye quest as an example, where you are tasked with taking that Nightfarer to a specific location and defeating a mini-boss that will only spawn when that objective is active. Beating the boss will reward you with an item to bring back to the Remembrance NPC.

While there seems to be an overarching narrative relating to the Nightlords, Nightreign's story appears to be quite character-driven. Each Nightfarer origin quest will be a major vehicle for the plot, likely encouraging players to try out each character, rather than sticking with the one they like best. The Nightfarers are the playable characters, but they're also Nightreign's protagonists, featuring heavily in the narrative as pre-established characters, rather than the blank slates you play in Elden Ring.

Raider’s Remembrances Feature Solo Boss Fights

Dedicated Single-Player Quests

With Nightreign's multiplayer focus, there has been a worry that playing solo will not be viable for those who prefer to play alone. While it's only a small consolation, there do appear to be segments dedicated to playing solo. Raider's Remembrance flashbacks will be solo boss fights, though it's unclear from the preview if this is exclusive to him, or if all of his Remembrances are such.

This doesn't necessarily address the concerns surrounding solo player balance or viability, but it's an unexpected twist nonetheless. This could conceivably be a roadblock for those who are committed to Nightreign as a multiplayer game – if any of the Raider Remembrance bosses are especially tough and co-op isn't allowed, it may turn out to be a progress gate. Regardless, variety was a bit of a concern coming out of the severely pared down network test, so it's a promsing look into how Elden Ring Nightreign will deliver different kinds of content.
