Summary

  • Demand for Elemental 2 is growing due to the success of the first movie, and there are rumors of discussions about expanding the franchise at Disney. The unique premise and warm reception from Disney+ subscribers indicate a positive outlook for a potential sequel.
  • Elemental 2 is not officially confirmed yet, but the success of previous Pixar sequels and the potential influence of Inside Out 2 increase its chances of being greenlit.
  • The cast for Elemental 2 is uncertain, as voice actors are not officially tied to the sequel. While continuity would suggest that Leah Lewis and Mamoudou Athie should reprise their roles as Ember and Wade, Pixar has occasionally recast actors for creative reasons in previous sequels. The story of Elemental 2 could pick up where the first movie left off, following Ember and Wade as they face new challenges in a different location, while still exploring themes of diversity and acceptance.

Demand for Elemental 2 has steadily increased as Pixar's Elemental gained late-blooming box-office traction followed by streaming success on Disney+ - and there are some signs that Wade and Ember may return. Elemental takes place in a city where air, fire, water, and earth residents reside but do not interact. When a fire element named Ember (voiced by Leah Lewis) meets a water element named Wade (Mamoudou Athie), the two fall in love even though they cannot touch each other.

The unique premise helped Elemental through a tepid opening weekend to become another creative triumph for Pixar, and the world it takes place in more than warrants revisiting in an Elemental 2. While there are no concrete plans for an Elemental sequel yet, there have been rumors and reports that conversations around expanding Wade and Embers tale into a franchise are taking place at Disney. Plus, should Elemental 2 go ahead, previous comments from the creative team behind the first movie have hinted at where the story could lead after Elemental.

DID YOU KNOW: To create the desired effects in Elemental, Pixar utilized 151,000 cores spread across three large rooms, a significant increase compared to the 923 cores used for Finding Nemo.

Elemental 2 Is Rumored, But Nothing Official Yet

While there's been no solid news on Elemental 2 yet, the potential Pixar sequel is being discussed in various places (though, unfortunately, there's been nothing official). Elemental managed to beat the live-action Little Mermaid and Guardians of the Galaxy 3 in viewing figures when it made its Disney+ debut. This was no mean feat, and likely something Disney took notice of. While Elemental got off to a slow start, it's clear that Disney+ subscribers have warmed to Wade and Ember, which can only be a positive when it comes to the chances of Elemental 2 moving forward.

However, according to a report first shared by The Direct in September 2023, industry insider Jeff Bock has heard of plans for an Elemental sequel at Disney, and possibly even a Disney+ show. While there's no way to Bock's claims they're also not that farfetched given the against-the-odds success story Elemental turned out to be for Pixar. This is also in line with previous reports (also from The Direct) courtesy of Elemental writers John Hoberg and Kat Likkel, who both hinted that there were unused story plans for Elemental that could easily extend the franchise beyond the first movie.

Elemental 2 Is Not Confirmed

Inside Out 2's Success May Help Influence Elemental 2's Future

So far, Elemental 2 is not officially confirmed. Only six of Pixar's previous 18 original features — Toy Story, Cars, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, and Inside Out — have received a sequel or prequel. One Pixar movie likely to influence the future of the Elemental sequel Inside Out 2.

Like Elemental, Inside Out was one of Pixar's more abstract concepts, focusing on personified human emotions. Should the sequel to the equally-quirky Inside Out be a hit, it will likely increase the chances for Elemental 2 being greenlit.

Elemental 2 Cast

Voice Cast Not Yet Tied

Since Elemental 2 has not been confirmed, the Elemental voice actors are not officially tied to the Elemental 2 cast. While most actors reprise their roles in Pixar sequels, the studio has occasionally recast actors for creative reasons. In the 2022 spinoff film Lightyear, Toy Story actor Tim Allen did not voice Buzz Lightyear because Chris Evans was cast instead. Also, Huckleberry Milner replaced Spencer Fox as Dash in The Incredibles 2.

Leah Lewis (Ember) and Mamoudou Athie (Wade) deserve the chance to reprise their roles in the Elemental 2 cast.

Given that Elemental takes place in an entire city, Pixar could choose to follow Ember and Wade in a sequel or hire new voice actors to explore different elements' stories. If a sequel continues to follow Ember and Wade, however, Leah Lewis (Ember) and Mamoudou Athie (Wade) deserve the chance to reprise their roles in the Elemental 2 cast.

Elemental 2 Isn't Confirmed, But The First Movie Sets It Up

Though Elemental 2 is not confirmed, the first movie does set up a sequel, or it at least leaves open the doors for a follow-up to be developed. The end of Elemental teases a potential Elemental 2 story as it sees Wade and Ember leaving Element City for a new location after Ember accepts an internship with a glass designer. Though it isn't clear where the internship is, Ember explains that it's far away and will run for several months.

The first movie does set up a sequel, or it at least leaves open the doors for a follow-up to be developed.

Elemental 2's story can pick up exactly where Elemental left off, as the sequel can follow Ember and Wade as they face new challenges in a different location that's built for different kinds of elements, such as Land and Air people. Oftentimes with Pixar sequels, the studio will tell a story with similar themes and messages as the original but with characters or settings flipped.

If a sequel is ever confirmed, it would make sense for the Elemental 2 story to focus on Wade and Ember leaving Element City for another location Elemental, but still continue exploring themes of diversity and acceptance.

The Elemental Writers Have A Sequel Idea

Likkel And John Hoberg Already Have The Beginning Of A Sequel In Mind

Though it’s unclear whether Elemental will even get a sequel, writers Kat Likkel and John Hoberg already have the beginnings of an Elemental sequel in mind. While speaking with The Direct, the Elemental writers itted that there is “so much more to tell” when it comes to the story of Ember and Wade. Some of that “more” was actually planned early on to tease a sequel.

Likkel revealed that she initially fought to include the “steam baby” of Wade and Ember at the end of Elemental. There was a plan for a scene involving the pair bringing their new baby home to Element City after a jump forward in time, but it ultimately didn’t make it into the movie. That tease of a baby for the two of them, and the challenges the baby would present, could have teed up a sequel. Likkel explained:

At one point, there was going to be a little addendum at the end. Instead of them [Wade and Ember] just leaving at the end, you were going to see that they had been gone, and we’re coming back to visit, and they’ve had a baby, and the baby was steam. And so it’s like… that was something I kept fighting for that for a long time.

As Hoberg pointed out in the same interview though, there are other avenues of story to explore in a potential Elemental sequel as well, like just how Ember and Wade navigate married life as two different elements. Hoberg told The Direct:

In a marriage, this is the big romantic moment. And now they’ve got to figure their life out together. And I think all of us just love the thought of like, ’What are they up to now?’

Deciding the answer to that question could bring a new Elemental 2 story idea to the minds of the writers if Pixar and Disney decide to greenlight a sequel.
