Searchlight Pictures has released a brand-new trailer for 1917 director Sam Mendes' latest feature film Empire of Light, starring Olivia Colman. The story of Empire of Light centers around a love story that develops in a beautiful old cinema in a seaside town on the south coast of England during the 1980s. The film also features a cast that includes Micheal Ward, Tom Brooke, Tanya Moodie, Hannah Onslow, Crystal Clarke, Toby Jones, and Colin Firth, who also made an appearance in 1917. The film also finds Mendes reuniting with Oscar-winning cinematographer Roger Deakins and a host of other talented collaborators, that include editor Lee Smith (Dunkirk, Inception) and composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (The Social Network, Soul).
Now, Searchlight Pictures has dropped a first-look teaser trailer for Empire of Light, putting the spotlight on the love story between Colman and Ward's characters. Featuring some of Deakins' stunning visual imagery, the trailer is accompanied by narration from Toby Jones as he describes an "illusion of motion and life" created while watching a film. While the trailer reveals no further plot details, it does offer glimpses of the highs and lows of the romance at the center of the story in the breathtakingly colorful 1980s setting. Mendes has proved to be one of the greatest filmmakers over the last two decades after working on acclaimed films like the 007 feature Skyfall and American Beauty, the latter of which earned him the Oscar for Best Director and Best Picture. The British director has described Empire of Light as a "personal project," with the film also marking his first writing credit since sharing screenplay duties with Krysty Wilson-Cairns for 1917 and also his first ever solo screenwriting credit. Empire of Light has the makings of another awards season contender for Mendes and will make its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival next month. Audiences can check out Empire of Light when the film makes a wide theatrical debut in December.
