Movie studio Blumhouse recently gave an update on the Five Nights at Freddy's movie, as they announced they are in the middle of deg animatronics for the film and filming begins early next year (via IGN). This film has been in the development phase for a while and fans are excited to hear progress has been made. This news might encourage fans to revisit some of their favorite games from the franchise.
FNaF games have been coming out since 2014 and most feature similar game mechanics. All the games, however, are beloved by the ionate fanbase as they continue to unravel the complicated story. Here is what Metacritic has to say about the FNaF games.
Ultimate Custom Night - N/A
Ultimate Custom Night was a spinoff game of Five Nights at Freddy's that was released in 2018. There is no critic's score for this game, but it does have a fan score of 7.8.
This was an interesting game that fans seemed to enjoy. The player was able to take 50 different characters and play their own night with as many as they wanted and at whatever difficulty they wanted them. This game also added to the overall story of Five Nights at Freddy's, as there is a hidden message behind the whole game. The player is playing as William Afton, and he is tortured by animatronics night after night as his own personal hell. It is a fine game, but it is strange no critics reviewed it.
FNaF World - 45
FNaF World was the first spinoff game from the Five Nights at Freddy's Franchise. It was released in 2016. It has the lowest Metacritic score as it is sitting at 45.
This game has a completely different tone than the others. It is not scary, and the player plays as one of the first four animatronics. This one got low scores mainly due to technical problems with the game. According to PC Gamer, Cawthon rushed the publication of the game, so it was largely unfinished. He later took the game off of steam to be tweaked. Due to this reason, FNaF World is widely considered the most forgettable game in the franchise.
Five Nights At Freddy's 4 - 51
The first main installment on this list is Five Nights At Freddy's 4 which sits at 51 on Metacritic. This game premiered in 2015 and takes place in a bedroom where the re-designed animatronics are attempting to kill the player.
This was the first game to take place outside any Fazbear establishment, but added a lot to the confusing lore of the game with hints like the flowers and IV bad in the bedroom. This game added new mechanics like listening for breathing at the doors, which made the game feel more immersive than others, and perhaps scarier. Where this game lost some fans is the Nightmare game mode. This mode frustrated a lot of players, as this animatronic seemed to have no pattern and kills without reason.
Help Wanted - 53
Five Nights At Freddy's: Help Wanted has a 53 on Metacritic and was released to the world in 2019. This game was special as it was a virtual reality game that plugged the players into the world of FNaF.
The most interesting part of this game is that it takes the player through a few nights of every previous game, so it is like a time capsule of sorts. It also had unique minigames that saw the player be face-to-face with some animatronics, which makes Help Wanted one of the scariest first-person games to play. The low score could be credited to the addition of a new character Glitchtrap, which complicated the lore and meant there was more story to unravel. They added tapes the player can find to help map out the story, but it is fairly tough to follow.
Pizzeria Simulator - 60
Five Nights At Freddy's: Pizzeria Simulator is a tycoon-style game where the player designs their own restaurant. It was released in 2017 and has a 60 on Metacritic.
After purchasing different items during the day, the player returned to a classic FNaF game mode at night, where the player needs to survive until closing time. Pizzeria Simulator added a lot to the lore as there were special hints and clues around the game, like the robot's stories. The best part of this game, however, is the closing monologue by Henry. This monologue is the perfect way to end the game and will give any fan goosebumps the first time they listen.
Five Nights At Freddy's 2 - 62
Five Nights At Freddy's 2 was the second installment of the franchise. It was released in 2014 and has a 62 on Metacritic. This game continued the resume of the first FNaF game as it was easy to understand the point-and-click style.
Five Nights At Freddy's 2 saw a more elaborate pizzeria that the player must navigate as they had more mechanics to figure out. The mask mechanic whenever an animatronic entered the office added a new element of fear the player had not experienced at that point. There were tons more characters added, which made it slightly confusing, as the player had to how to stop each one. What most likely kept this game from being scored higher was the puppet and its wind-up mechanic as that frustrated many players.
Sister Location - 62
Five Nights At Freddy's: Sister Location was released in 2016 and has a 62 on Metacritic. This game is the fifth overall installment and surprised some fans, as they believed FNaF 4 was the final game.
Sister Location features all brand-new animatronics to scare the viewer. It also went away from the classic style of FNaF games. There are new terrifying game modes that the player must beat, like avoiding ballora in a dark room. The end of this game sees Michael Afton, the player character, speak to his father William, which opened up a whole new story for fans to explore. Overall, this game was enjoyed by fans and started a new era for FNaF.
Five Nights At Freddy's 3 - 63
Five Nights At Freddy's 3 has a 63 on Metacritic and was released in 2015. This game was interesting as it was set in a different establishment and there was only one animatronics.
This game is significant for mainly one reason. This game is where the lore really picks up. The player had to punch in the keypad on the wall to uncover the game's secrets, which opened the door for the rest of the franchise's story to be developed. Springtrap's jumpscare is also extremely underwhelming and forgettable, which explains the lower scores.
Security Breach - 64
Five Nights At Freddy's: Security Breach is the latest installment as it was released in 2021 and has a 64 on Metacritic. This was the first open-world FNaF game as the player was able to explore a whole complex.
The open-world nature of this game amplified the horror as the game featured many scary moments, like attempting to escape the daycare worker's play area. The mostly positive reviews could be credited to the fact that it is a breath of fresh air in the FNaF franchise, as their usual game mechanics were getting a little stale. The game also got popular on TikTok as many lines from the game became popular on the platform.
Five Nights At Freddy's - 78
The best-rated FNaF game is the originator, the very first Five Nights At Freddy's. The game was so simple, yet so terrifying, and it has a 78 on Metacritic.
FNaF was a major success when it was released in 2014. The best thing about this game, without a doubt, was the jump scares. The animatronics were so terrifying and the noise they made when they scared the player is etched into the brains of every fan. Although the lore is great, one thing that made this game amazing was there was no convoluted story to cloud the actual gameplay. The player could focus on the great game, rather than finding any Easter eggs.
