The mighty Avengers #54. Facing a battle on many fronts, ranging from middle America to the halls of Asgard, the Avengers team is stretched thin. As if these confrontations weren't challenging enough, this evil Thor is working with Dark Phoenix.

Avengers #54 from Jason Aaron and Juan Frigeri continues the path of the "The Death Hunters" story in the ongoing comic series, as the villainous Doctor Doom is creating his own malevolent dream team for a war on Earth-616 heroes. And in the latest preview, the action gets a whole lot more interesting, and a lot more cosmic.

In Marvel's preview of Avengers #54 the Multiversal Masters of Evil supergroup has been formed to take on worlds to gain power. All that was standing in their way were a team of Deathloks with the capability of reality-jumping. Even Thunder Can Burn, Even Deathloks Can Die, the title of Avengers #54 holds a foreboding warning for the pages that are unveiled. The Deathlok is in mortal danger and Earth-616's Thor looks like he may not survive this encounter with his evil doppelganger and Dark Phoenix holding his vile reins.

Thor comes into the fray a bit too late and attempts to minimize evil Thor's path of destruction. Before Ghost Rider's chain can be seen entering the frame, Earth 616's Thor looks like he's at the mercy of an evil Thor with a vile Dark Phoenix holding the reigns. The preview ends with Robbie Reyes, Ghost Rider's chain taking hold of evil Thor's hammer that is poised to deal the killing blow to Earth 616's Thor.

These few pages give new meaning to things 'getting worse before they get better.' The Deathloks were sent out to defend the multiverse by the mysterious Avenger Prime, and the Avengers have been handed many defeats over the course of "The Death Hunters." Will the demise of this Deathlok spell doom for the remaining Avengers, or will Dark Phoenix and evil Thor find defeat at the hands of a cobbled-together Avengers team? Captain Marvel and Captain America may have to once again prove to be beacons of hope in the darkest of times. Avengers #54 hits stores March 16.
