The Expanse, Amazon Prime Video picked up the show for seasons 4-6. While the series is currently set to end without adapting the material from books 7-9, foreshadowing suggests that a continuation of the TV show may be possible.
The Expanse's final season derives from book 6, entitled Babylon's Ashes, with the incorporation of the novella Strange Dogs, which occurs soon after in the series' timeline. Laconia was mentioned and briefly shown in The Expanse season 5 finale, as iral Winston Duarte and the Martian breakaway fleet settled on the planet with the Protomolecule sample bought from Marco Inaros, as well as the scientist Paolo Cortazar. The Expanse season 6 embeds Strange Dogs in the background of its central focus on the war between Earth, Mars, and Marco's Free Navy.
The Expanse season 6's Laconia storyline is a promising sign for the series' future after its conclusion on Amazon. The first three minutes of episode 1, appropriately entitled "Strange Dogs" depict Cara, a child born on the alien planet, exploring Laconia's forest-like terrain. She remarks on creatures resembling fish and birds before a pink, reptilian-looking animal emerges from the underbrush, which Cara calls a "dog." The short scene sets the stage for The Expanse season 7 taking place without Amazon, as the series' later books Persepolis Rising, Tiamat's Wrath, and Leviathan Falls all focus their narratives on the rise of the Laconian Empire.
The inclusion of Strange Dogs in The Expanse season 6 reminds viewers of the developing story beyond the raging war in the Sol system and establishes the widespread settlement of new worlds such as Laconia, which has been a key concept in the show since The Expanse season 3. Similar to season 4's setting on the alien planet Ilus, this time spent on Laconia evokes the result of humans' access to undiscovered terrain within the series' larger theme of space colonization. If The Expanse season 7 materializes, the writers have already laid the proper groundwork for Laconia and won't have to waste time on needless exposition to contextualize the planet.
Franck and Abraham, who serve as writers/executive producers for the show, and showrunner Naren Shankar have not ruled out returning to The Expanse one day to adapt the remainder of its source material. In an interview with io9, Shankar stated that after season 6, "the door is open to other things. And if the stars align, I think you’d find a lot of people willing to participate in it." It's encouraging that The Expanse's creators are willing to explore the books' later content should the opportunity arise.
It has been confirmed that each subsequent episode in The Expanse season 6 will dedicate its opening minutes to the story on Laconia. It's possible that there are plans to continue the show away from Amazon, though nothing has been made known publicly at this time. All in all, season 6's Laconia plot reveals that The Expanse season 7 is certainly not out of the question.
