In a recent interview with Collider at SDCC, Hemsworth reveals the current status of Extraction 3, touching on why the sequel is taking so long. According to the actor, the main reason for the film still being in the early stages of development is a desire to make sure a strong story is in place before moving ahead. “We're in the middle of putting it together now, and writing it, and just trying to crack the story. Each time there's been such a great collective collaboration between myself, Sam, the Russos, Netflix in expanding that universe and bringing that courage in life.
“We just wanna make sure that we have it right, and that we have a script that is good enough basically to follow the last two, because I'm really proud of what we've done previously, and hopefully we can do it again. It's exciting, in the early stages of putting it all together. It's a fun process.”

The Extraction 2 ending sees Rake and Nik (Golshifteh Farahani) in prison before meeting with a mysterious new character played by Idris Elba. Elba's character offers Rake and Nik a new mission in exchange for their freedom, with the end credits rolling before anything more is revealed. Extraction 3, then, already has an obvious place to start, since Rake has a challenging new task ahead of him.
Both Extraction movies have been massive viewership hits for Netflix.
While the specifics of this new mission aren't revealed, the film's title and Rake's particular skill set would suggest that he will be extricating a high-value individual from dangerous territory. After the first film takes place in the hot streets of Dhaka, the sequel moves the action to frigid Eastern Europe, and Extraction 3's setting would seemingly see Rake travel to a new environment once more. Urban combat, in particular, has been a staple of the last two films, and a third movie would seemingly follow this same pattern.

It's not clear how many of the Extraction 2 cast, including Tinatin Dalakishvili as Ketevan, Andro Japaridze as Sandro Radiani, and Olga Kurylenko as Mia, would return for a third movie, but Extraction 3 is essentially guaranteed to feature at least one franchise staple: the one-take action scene. Both movies' "oners" have been highlights of their respective films, and the third film would have the challenging task of going above and beyond the 21-minute sequence featured in the most recent installment. Hemsworth's latest update, however, suggests Extraction 3 is still a ways away.
