Summary

  • Mythic Deathclaw is a powerful foe in Fallout 4 with a high health pool and damage rate.
  • It can randomly spawn based on player level or be found southwest of O'Neill Family Manufacturing in the Glowing Sea.
  • Its weak spot is its belly, which takes significantly more damage due to its softness, making it a strategic target during combat.

Fallout 4 - as with the other games in the series - is full of bizarre mutated wildlife, most of which is also highly lethal. When exploring the Wasteland, it's common enough that players will be attacked by some of these creatures and will have to engage in some kind of fight for survival, with the likes of Bloatflies and Radroaches being easily defeated, while others such as Deathclaws pose far more of a challenge.

Redditor Worth-Caterpillar-90 took to the r/fo4 Subreddit to share an image of a "Mythic" version of the aforementioned Deathclaw, which they stumbled across after years of playing. The Mythic Deathclaw represents the Apex version of the species in the game, and although its resistances aren't higher than that of a regular Deathclaw, its impressive health pool in the thousands and high rate of damage make it a particularly intimidating foe to encounter.

Worth-Caterpillar-90's screenshot showed the creature in the Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System (V.A.T.S.) mode, which displayed the percentage chances of hitting certain parts of the creature’s body, with all of its limbs and its head equally displaying as 95%, which may look easy enough, but as pointed out by Farabel, the Mythic Deathclaw has a particularly weak spot that wasn't suggested: its belly. This is because while targeting a Deathclaw's head does result in it taking extra damage compared to when it is hit in its limbs or back, the creature will take significantly more when hit in its stomach due to how soft it is.

Farabel also explains that this is why the Deathclaws are hunched over in general, as their tougher body parts will protect their weaker area and reduce how much of an easy target it is to hit.

Fallout 4 brought a lot of changes to a franchise trying to adapt to a modern audience, including improvements over Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas.

Where Is The Mythic Deathclaw?

Players Have To Be At A Certain Level For The Creature To Spawn

Regular Deathclaws are fairly common in Fallout 4, with these creatures being engineered before the Great War with the intent of being used as cheap replacements for humans during close-combat search-and-destroy missions. Despite this, many players will likely never encounter a Mythic Deathclaw because it only spawns for those who are above Level 90 due to the game's level scaling, meaning those who wish to take on the apex creature would have to put many hours into the game beforehand.

While the Mythic Deathclaw can spawn fairly randomly depending on a players' level, a single Mythic Deathclaw is pre-placed southwest of O'Neill Family Manufacturing in the far Southwestern area of The Commonwealth, in the Glowing Sea for those who wish to actively seek it out. Those who do hunt the elusive creature and use Farabel's method to defeat it will be rewarded with a Deathclaw Hand, a cigarette, and some Deathclaw meat.

Those who have installed the Wasteland Workshop DLC add-on may encounter a Mythic Deathclaw earlier through the Deathclaw cage mechanic, where the mighty creature can be tamed.

Other commenters have also mentioned just how much easier it is to kill a Deathclaw when knowing this trick, even with basic items such as unmodified combat rifles. Still, the Deathclaw, particularly the Mythic variant, is one of the more brutal creatures to run into in the Wasteland, so players should be prepared for quite a fight ahead should they encounter one in Fallout 4.
