Summary

  • Bode's confession in the finale guaranteeing his return to prison sets the stage for a dramatic showdown with Sleeper in season 2.
  • Bode's shocking sacrifice for Freddy ensured his freedom, despite costing him his own and his parents' trust in him.
  • Luke's kidney donation to Sharon provided a silver lining amidst negative developments for Bode and Three Rock.

The explosive finale of Bode’s decision also impacted Gabriela in Fire Country, after she fought for him and he just put up walls.

Fire Country season 1, episode 22 included various negative developments, for Bode and the Leones but also Three Rock, given that Mel’s investigation didn’t only focus on Bode and Sleeper but also on what the inmate fire camp’s management did not do to stop their feud. However, with the news of Luke being Sharon’s match and wanting to donate his kidney to her and Freddy’s release after his wrongful incarceration, not everything that happened was bad news for the residents of Edgewater. Still, with a few shocking revelations up until its very end, the episode brilliantly set up season 2.

Why Bode Confessed To Relapsing In Fire Country Season 1's Finale

Confessing Was The Only Way To Get Freddy Out

The failed drug test news shared in Fire Country season 1, episode 21’s ending already made it difficult for Bode to his parole hearing, as he would have had to convince them that he hadn’t relapsed and that it was Sleeper getting back at him. However, Mel’s investigation findings into Three Rock revealed that the idea of Bode she had made for herself was that of a bad guy, implying that Freddy would have suffered as a result, continuing to be incarcerated because of his connection to Bode.

Bode’s test results already made Manny’s belief in him waver, and he was always one of his biggest ers. He knew that it would have been much more difficult for Vince and Sharon to believe in him, and if he continued telling the truth, Bode was sure Freddy would have suffered, meaning that he would have likely returned to jail while Freddy unfairly remained at Three Rock. By falsely itting to a relapse, Bode ensured Freddy’s freedom and that he would have been believed by the parole board, cementifying his return to prison but also his best friend’s freedom.

itting to a relapse, despite not being true, guaranteed to Bode that his confession would have ensured Freddy’s freedom.

Sharon & Luke's Secret Explained

Fire Country Season 1 Hinted At A Relationship, But It Was Never That

Michael Trucco as Luke Leone and Diane Farr as Sharon Leone in Fire Country season 1's finale

Fire Country season 1’s finale was intentionally opaque about Luke’s involvement in Sharon’s problems, which could have easily been mistaken for a potential romantic relationship between the two. Given how the last time Luke was in Fire Country’s Edgewater he tried to kiss Sharon, it would have been easy to mistake his interest in her for ulterior motives. However, Fire Country season 1’s finale easily revealed how Luke’s presence was very good news for Vince and especially Sharon.

Hard feelings between Luke and Vince only worsened after Luke’s actions in season 1, episode 8, essentially making him a stranger. However, with Luke trying with many other Edgewater residents to see if he could have been a match for Sharon, the possibility of being a match for her kidney transplant was always present. Sharon revealing to Vince that Luke had offered her kidney and she accepted because it was without strings attached essentially solved the problems her illness caused her ever since Fire Country season 1 began, being one of the few pieces of good news of the finale.

Why Bode Lied To Gabriela & Told Her To Build A Life Without Him

Bode Accepted His Fate In Prison & Wanted To Protect Her

Stephanie Arcila as Gabriela Perez in Fire Country season 1's finale

While Gabriela’s trust in Bode never wavered, with her being willing to stand by him whether his parole board hearing was successful or not, Bode still decided to shut her out in Fire Country season 1’s finale. Bode believed that Gabriela deserved a life without him because he misinterpreted Mel’s version of the events in Three Rock and Sharon’s disillusionment in him as what everyone would have thought of him, even Gabriela, who instead believed in him and in second chances.

With his confession sending him back to prison, Bode knew it would have been more difficult for Gabriela to see him, and he didn’t want her to press pause on her life by waiting for him. In addition, considering how even his own family had trouble believing him when he told them the truth, that he hadn’t relapsed, Bode began partially believing the story everyone told of him as the bad guy, despite also believing it must have been Sleeper who tinkered with his results. This hints at Bode possibly embracing his dark side in Fire Country season 2.

How Fire Country Season 1's Finale Set Up Sleeper As Bode's Biggest Enemy

Fire Country Had Already Teased It, But Now They Are Both Back In Prison

Grant Harvey as Sleeper and Max Thieriot as Bode Leone in Fire Country season 1 episode 20

Bode’s wariness when Sleeper ed Three Rock already suggested how dangerous he was, but Bode’s test coming back positive for drugs cemented Sleeper as his enemy. His building a following at the fire inmate camp upset the balance of the good they were doing as inmate firefighters, essentially poisoning what had become Bode and Freddy’s lifeline. However, telling Manny the truth about what was happening made Bode Sleeper’s enemy, given that it forced Sleeper back to prison.

Someone on Sleeper’s crew possibly switching the samples so that it was Bode’s that came back positive for drugs essentially guaranteed Bode’s return to prison too. While Bode’s past already proved Sleeper a bad influence on him, Bode returning to prison made him single-minded about Sleeper’s interference, making his wish to exact his revenge on Sleeper much likelier. Such a development thus set up a potential showdown between Bode and Sleeper in Fire Country season 2.

Why Sharon & Vince Have Trouble Believing Bode

They Really Thought Bode Had Relapsed

Bode giving Vince and Sharon the news about his failed drug test had the opposite reaction that could have been expected. Throughout Fire Country season 1, Sharon always believed Bode had changed, ing a reconciliation between Bode and Vince, who had for a long time blamed Bode for Riley’s death. However, Sharon took Bode mentioning Sleeper being at fault for his drug test as a lack of responsibility, not knowing everything that had happened at Three Rock.

Bode’s past problems with addiction made his relapse more believable for Sharon, as the last time they were all together he faced those problems, and they had little time together since he returned to Edgewater. With Bode and Sleeper’s feud making everything more difficult and Sharon’s health problems, it was easier for Sharon and Vince to think about the Bode in front of them as the person they knew years ago and not as the one he proved himself to be since he returned to Edgewater.

With Fire Country season 1’s finale setting up Bode’s return to prison, season 2 will have to deal with the aftermath of his return, both relating to his feud with Sleeper and the relationships with his parents, Manny and Gabriela. However, Fire Country season 1, episode 22 also introduced new threats, such as Mel’s investigation into Three Rock that didn’t stop at Bode’s feud with Sleeper but found management’s mistakes in handling the whole situation.

Another interesting hint was the reason for Cara’s unease when learning about Jake possibly living with Bode. With Cara’s news that Genevieve was actually her biological daughter, Cara and Bode’s past relationship potentially made him Genevieve’s father, kickstarting what could be a central story in Fire Country season 2. Finally, Sharon’s impending transplant solved her illness storyline, making it likely for Fire Country season 2 to introduce other challenges for her and Vince, but at least less life-threatening.
