The Frankenstein: New World miniseries is set one-thousand years after the original series, promising an even more treacherous, but more exciting aventure. As the desolate new world continues to evolve and flourish, distanced from the toxins of the past, Frankenstein and Lilja are embarking where no modern civilization has yet traveled: across the “Sea of Forever.” As Christopher Golden explained:

While maintaining the familiar Lovecraftian, deadpan, mysticism of Mike Mignola’s original Hellboy series, Frankenstein’s newest adventures are no longer shackled by the rules of the franchise’s past.

Of course, as the series teases, an ancient and familiar threat still lurks in the shadows of this new world. More likely than not, that means the return of the mysterious entity “Murk.” In the previous Frankenstein series, readers were introduced to a creature called Murk. The monstrosity is defined as a “new evil” born from death and ancient hunger, spurred by the new world to hunt its antithesis. While the heroes never run into the evil incarnate, it’s relatively clear what it is searching for: Frankenstein.

More specifically, Murk wants the power inside Frankenstein and those he’s touched, as flowing within the movie monster’s ancient body is a mystical energy called Vril. These vestiges of God’s power have been locked away since Ragna Rok, but with Frankenstein’s return, so too has God’s power. This fascinating dynamic will continue to take shape, and be elaborated on in more detail, in the four-issue sequel miniseries, which has quickly become one of the most highly anticipated Dark Horse Comics releases of this year.

In between the chaos and malevolent powers that hide in the shadows of the now-foreign surface, Frankenstein and Lilja still have an entirely new world to explore.

The world may have ended once before, but that doesn’t mean it can’t end again. With Frankenstein being the only character in the current Hellboy canon to possess Vril, he and his traveling companion are going to continue to be the target of those hungry for his power. Yet in between the chaos and malevolent powers that hide in the shadows of the now-foreign surface, Frankenstein and Lilja still have an entirely new world to explore. With only the Forever Sea between them and an endless destination, expect never-before-seen sights in this expansion to the Hellboy universe.
