one of the most popular shojo manga series in the world. The 2019 anime adaptation only further sparked fans' interest in the franchise by delivering a faithful and emotion-filled adaptation of the manga's story. Fruits Basket integrates a lot of popular romance tropes into the story, including one that is arguably the most well-known of all.

One of the biggest plot points of Fruits Basket is the love triangle between Tohru, Kyo, and Yuki. The love triangle is a common trope in romance anime. However, Fruits Basket executes it differently than some other series.

Fruits Basket's Tohru smiles and holds cat kyo while real Kyo looks annoyed.

Rather than have two characters vying for the same love interest, Fruits Basket inserts a shocking reveal towards the end of the series by announcing that Yuki never felt romantically towards Tohru at all, and actually viewed her as more of a ive mother figure in his life. By adding this twist, the series was able to surprise viewers and end happily for everyone.

Yuki’s Reveal at the End of Fruits Basket Shockingly Twisted the Love Triangle Trope

The Series Was Able to End in a Fulfilling Way for Every Character

Kyo and Tohru wound up together as a happily-in-love couple, and Yuki was able to both focus on himself and find love of his own elsewhere. In other instances of the love triangle trope, at least one person winds up feeling scorned because they weren’t chosen, but Fruits Basket avoids this unfortunately common consequence entirely by taking the story in a completely different direction. Kyo and Yuki were also able to rebuild their relationship in the end too, which may not have been possible if they were both fighting for the affections of the same person.

Kyo and Yuki were in a constant rival relationship for nearly the entirety of Fruits Basket, hating one another because Yuki embodied the rat zodiac sign, who deceived the cat zodiac sign, Kyo. This deception led to the cat being excluded from the zodiac animals banquet and treated as an outcast in the family. For a while, Tohru's appearance in their lives seemed to be more of a hindrance than a help in mending their severed relationship, since it appeared as if both boys were in love with her. However, Yuki's ittance removed that obstacle to patching up their bond.

Machi, the Student Treasurer, Caught Yuki’s Eye Towards the End of Fruits Basket

Yuki and Machi in Fruits Basket

Kyo and Tohru eventually got married, and Yuki did as well, to someone else. Yuki pursued his dream of becoming president of the student council, excelling in a leadership role. The student council treasurer, Machi, caught his eye because she treated him differently from all the other girls in school who simply idolized him based on his looks. He and Machi experienced an adorably heartwarming love story as they got to know one another on a deeper level. In this way, Fruits Basket is a perfect romance anime, because every character found their perfect match, with no lingering hurt feelings.
