The Gears of War live-action movie from Netflix has officially landed the screenwriter responsible for Dune to adapt the acclaimed video games. The first Gears of War video game was released in 2006, telling the story of a squad of soldiers waging war against a subterranean enemy known as the Locust Horde. It was announced last November that Netflix would be adapting the game as a feature film in addition to an animated series.
Now, as per Netflix, the streamer's live-action Gears of War movie has now officially landed Jon Spaihts as a writer. Spaihts is a screenwriter best known for Denis Villeneuve's Dune (who also wrote the sequel), but his other credits include Prometheus and Doctor Strange. Check out Spaihts comment accompanying the announcement below:
“Gears of War is one of the all-time great action games, with vivid characters, a beautifully designed world, and a combat system that drives home the lethality of war and the importance of standing by your squates. It wants to be cinema, and I’m thrilled to have the chance to help that happen.”
What To Expect From The Gears Of War Movie
No plot details regarding the Gears of War movie have been released thus far, but there are now a handful of games from which the movie could draw inspiration. One of the biggest questions regarding any Gears of War adaptation is who the main character will be. Marcus Fenix serves as the playable protagonist for the first three games in the franchise, and it's certainly possible that he will return in live-action.
If Marcus does feature in the film, wrestler-turned-actor Dave Bautista has already expressed his interest on multiple occasions to play him. The two do, after all, look surprisingly alike. Regardless of who the movie's protagonist is, however, it's very likely that the Gears of War movie will chronicle events in a deadly conflict between humans and the Locust Horde.
The games take place on a planet called Sera, and it seems likely that any live-action movie will also adopt this same setting. Specifics regarding the Gears of War movie may be hard to come by, but it's fair to assume that, like the games, the adaptation will be bloody and gory. One of the main weapons in the game is, after all, a machine gun with a chainsaw built into it. While it's unclear what Spaihts has planned for the Gears of War movie, his work on Dune alone would suggest that he will do the game justice.
