Warning: Spoilers ahead for Ghosts season 4, episode 21, "Kyle."
coolest ghost powers at Woodstone Manor: the ability to jump into living people’s dreams, allowing him to talk directly to Jay and “travel” in his own sort of way.
Sass considers himself a storyteller, and that means he’s often on the sidelines of other ghosts’ stories, mostly observing with the occasional dry quip. Sass has had a couple of attempts at romance, like his crush he talked to through Jay’s dreams in Ghosts season 4, episode 5, or his unspoken feelings for Shiki, both alive and as ghosts in the afterlife. However, things seem to be turning around for Woodstone’s resident Lenape spirit, although I’m worried his happiness might be short-lived.
Ghosts Has Used Sass's Lack Of Sexual Experience As A Punchline For Years
Every Ghost Makes Jokes At Sass’s Expense, Which Is Frustrating And Mean
In Ghosts season 4, episode 8, Thor betrays Sass’s trust by telling Flower about him dying a virgin. This led to Ghosts’ most frustrating recurring joke about Sass’s virginity, largely through Flower, whose drugged stupor makes it hard to be too mad at her, but every ghost has made a wisecrack about Sass’s lack of dating experience. Sass has made it clear these jokes upset him, which makes the recurring bit feel bitter as well as stale.
Pete promised to use his power of roaming to find Sass a potential partner earlier in season 4, but it took over ten episodes for Ghosts season 4, episode 17 to introduce Joan, a screenwriting dame from the 1940s. Sass was torn between Joan and Shiki in Ghosts season 4, episode 17, but luckily, he chose the girl who immediately liked him for who he is, instead of a ghost from the past who desired him to be something he isn’t.

While the ghosts have nothing to do but meddle in each other’s business, the collective harping on Sass’s virginity was wearing thin. Even Nancy, one of the basement ghosts, pops up to let Sass and Joan know there is a bet on when the deed will happen. So many ghosts have had real moments of growth, like Pete getting to watch his daughter walk down the aisle, but Sass has not had much added in of character depth or backstory. It’s heartening to see him have a genuine connection with Joan.
Sass's First Time With Joan Means Ghosts Can No Longer Use The Same Joke Moving Forward
Thor And Trevor Give Sass Some Bad Advice Before Sass's First Time
When Joan tells Sass that tonight could be the big night, Trevor, Thor, and Flower completely freak out Sass by putting too much pressure on his performance. Thor shows Sass a trick that always works for him: assertively picking her up and tossing her down onto the bed. That night, Sass does his best to imitate Thor’s move, but he overdoes it, tossing Joan not on the bed but out of the second-story wall, a hysterical use of the ghost rules around furniture.
This episode once again proves that Joan is the right choice for Sass, as she reassures a despondent Sass that there is no pressure if he’s not ready. When Sass insists he wants to do it, Joan gives the perfect advice for screenwriting and the bedroom: don’t copy anyone else’s playbook, just be yourself. Later, Sass only has to say “Oh yeah” to everyone in the living room to get a rapturous celebration, reminiscent of the ending of The 40-Year-Old Virgin.
Next week's episode, "The Devil Went Down to Woodstone," will be the Ghosts season 4 finale. Ghosts has been renewed for season 5 and 6.
Now that Joan has taken Sasappis’s virginity, Ghosts will have to find a new butt of the joke. Because Sass seems young and has no obvious signs of what killed him, it’s likely his death is more tragic than comical, closer to Hetty’s death than Pete’s. But with Joan in his afterlife, Sass’s future seems more promising than his past.
Will Sass & Joan Actually Last As A Couple in Ghosts?
One Joan Line Suggests She Might Get Bored At Woodstone Manor No Matter Her Feelings For Sass
Not all Ghosts secondary characters stick around, like the fleeting time Ghosts season 5.
