While Gilmore Girls is characterized by the touching portrayal of the mother-daughter/best friend relationship between Lorelai and Rory, there are so many other interesting characters on the show. In a town like Stars Hollow, every resident has a unique, quirky, and larger-than-life personality.
Rory and Lorelai talk fast, so there is a ton of dia the series and so many excellent, memorable lines. A lot of the conversations between characters are heartwarming, funny, or poignant, but everyone on the show has a quote that embodies their personality exactly.
Michel: "People Are Particularly Stupid Today. I Can't Talk To Any More Of Them."
Lorelai's employee and friend, Michel, is renowned for his dislike and impatience with other people, making it somewhat surprising that he stayed in a customer service role for so long. However, Michel does have a higher tolerance (some might even say love) for his friends and colleagues.
Michel has some great quotes on Gilmore Girls, but this one sums him up best. While it does not convey any of the good feelings Michel does have towards some of the special people in his life, it absolutely does demonstrate his distaste for customers and humanity at large.
Sookie: "You Were A Good Cake, Clyde. Never Should Have Named You."
Sookie is kind-hearted and notoriously clumsy - she is forever knocking something over or catching something on fire. Sookie also has a great many roles in the show: she is the best friend and confidante of Lorelai, a second mother to Rory, and a popular resident of Stars Hollow.
However, the two main things fans think of when they think of Sookie is that firstly, she is a very talented chef and, two, she has a very funny and quirky personality. That is why this is the quote that encapsulates Sookie's character perfectly: it demonstrates both her ion for food and her goofy sense of humor. Who, other than Sookie, would name a cake?
Lane: "Of Course, I Don't Exactly Have What You And Dean Have Because You Love Dean And Dean Loves You Back. In My Situation, I Love Dave And Dave Thinks That I Have A Decent Sense Of Rhythm."
Rory's best friend Lane is an important character from the very beginning. Lane is torn between two worlds: her mother's world of religion and structure, and her own world of music and rebellion. Lane dreams of having an adolescence like Rory's - one with freedom and, of course, the option to date boys.
This quote encapsulates these parts of Lane's personality. It depicts her self-deprecating sense of humor, her romanticism, and her love of music - nothing sums her up better.
Kirk: "I Had An Imaginary Girlfriend For A While When I Was Young, But She Left Me."
Kirk might be the strangest character in Gilmore Girls. He lives with his mother for most of the show and comes across as a child who never quite grew up. However, there is something very endearing about Kirk's straightforward and naïve nature, and other Stars Hollow residents treat this character with kindness and patience (yes, even Luke).
This line perfectly sums up Kirk's personality because it demonstrates Kirk's accidental humor. Kirk does not exactly try to be funny, or at least he is only ever actually hilarious when he is not trying to be. It also shows Kirk's complete lack of self-confidence. However, fans were pleased to see that things do work out for this larger-than-life character, and he ends up with a kind and loving girlfriend and a pet pig called Petal.
Emily: "You Can Use Your Mother's Old Golf Clubs. They're Upstairs Gathering Dust Along With The Rest Of Her Potential."
Mother of Lorelai and grandmother of Rory, Emily is a demanding person. She is an absolute perfectionist and likes everything to be just right. Although this means she has an irable approach to getting things done, it does make her a tough person to be around and an even tougher mother. With expectations this high, people are bound to fall short.
Emily's words are cutting here, and they exemplify her often problematic (and sometimes just plain cruel) attitude. However, what this does not quite encapsulate is her underlying love for and pride in her daughter. Even though Emily can be harsh and blunt, fans did see her softer side at times.
Richard: "I Have A Lot To Do In A Day, Lorelai. I Don't Have Time To Keep Up With The Multitudes Of People Your Mother Employs."
Similar to his wife, Richard has a strained relationship with his daughter but is besotted with his granddaughter. The series sees Richard working tirelessly throughout and valuing his family above all else, even though his way of showing affection sometimes seems counter-productive.
This moment captures Richard best for two reasons. First, it shows that he is (and also thinks of himself) as an important and busy man - he does not have time for trivial things. And second, it shows his patience for his wife, who can be at times (or perhaps most of the time) quite difficult and particular. This is just one of the ways Gilmore Girls showed Richard and Emily were soul mates, and it illustrates the stoicism with which Richard approached his marriage.
Logan: "You Never Really Needed Rescuing, Ace. You Know That."
Logan, Rory's college boyfriend (and almost her fiancé) was initially entitled, spoiled, and barely faithful. While he did maintain some of these qualities, fans did get to know another side to Logan - a side that is funny, caring and above all loves, values, and respects Rory.
That is why this sums up Logan's personality so well: it demonstrates that Logan knows Rory is her own hero and that he knows she has great strength. This is why fans like Logan: he understands why Rory is so special and knows deep down that she is too good for him.
Luke: "This Right Here Is All I Will Ever Need. I Never Thought In My Wildest Dreams That It Would Happen, That You And Me, That We Would Happen. But We Did."
Long-term friend and eventual husband of Lorelai, Luke seems to always be aggravated about some small-town drama which he does not have time for, but he would never live anywhere other than Stars Hollow. He is a blunt but kind man who has been a father figure in Rory's life.
While Luke is sometimes angry, he is also gentle and considerate. This line shows how unassuming and humble he is, as well as how much he adores Lorelai. Fans watched seasons and seasons of Luke patiently waiting for Lorelai, feeling blessed to have her in his life in any capacity. Fans were thrilled to see Lorelai and Luke finally make things work, as they knew he was right for Lorelai all along.
Rory: "I Can't Believe We Get To Sit Around And Talk About Books And Get Graded."
Rory, one of the titular Gilmore Girls, is intelligent, ambitious, and has a work ethic others can only dream of. She is a doting daughter and a patient and adoring granddaughter. Although one of the most complex and confusing characters on Gilmore Girls ,Rory is generally liked by all.
Fans will know that the most integral part of Rory's character is that she is an over-achiever. She loves school, academia, and above all else, books. Her relationship with the written word is an emotional one, and reading is the thing that makes her happiest.
Lorelai: "It's My Life, Rory. I Went Through All This Effort For Many, Many Years Making Sure People Only Knew What I wanted Them To Know, And Now You're Going To Lay It All Out In A Book?"
Lorelai is known for her quick wit, pop-culture references, coffee addiction, and ability to speak incredibly fast. Although it would be tempting to think that a quote about coffee or babbling would best encapsulate this character, fans know that there is so much more to Lorelai than her love of coffee or talking.
Lorelai is incredibly private. She is so used to being self-sufficient that the idea of depending on other people or other people knowing too much about her is terrifying. But despite this fear, Lorelai changes her mind and agrees to let Rory write the book about her life because her love for her daughter is greater than her fear of people really knowing her.
