Get ready, From the MonsterVerse tie-ins to epic miniseries, the King of the Monsters has carved out a place of his own in the comic sphere. But next year, IDW Publishing is bringing readers an ambitious new universe with Godzilla at the center of it all.
The official Godzilla website and X revealed that next May, IDW will be releasing Godzilla: The New Heroes Free Comic Book Day 2025, a new special that will offer fans a ten-page prelude to IDW's Godzilla universe.

Per the special's solicition, the Godzilla one-shot will feature "a group of mercenaries that fly through space in Mechagodzilla", "a half-kaiju, half-human freak", and "a bold superhero take on G-Force".
IDW Goes All In With New Godzilla Universe
Reinventing an Icon For a New Era is a Great Choice
Ever since 1954, the Godzilla franchise has been delighting monster movie fans all across the world. With nearly forty official movies, including several developed as part of Legendary's MonsterVerse, Godzilla is the longest running film franchise in history. But of course, no epic film franchise would feel complete without tie-in comics, which Godzilla has had dozens of. Ever since the 1970s, various publishers have owned the rights to produce Godzilla comics, including Marvel and Dark Horse Comics. Legendary Comics has also put out comics to strictly tie into the MonsterVerse incarnation of Godzilla.
But since 2010, IDW Publishing has been Godzilla's comic book home and it has put out more Godzilla comics than any other American publisher. IDW has put a lot of effort into its Godzilla books, pumping out ambitious and beloved stories like Godzilla: The Half-Century War and Godzilla in Hell, not to mention a crossover no one saw coming with Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. At this year's New York Comic Con, IDW Publishing continued to show its love for the franchise with three new miniseries, including Mothra’s first solo comic book.
IDW Gives Godzilla Fans a New Jumping-On Point with The New Heroes
A Brilliant Idea in the Wake of The Ultimate And Absolute Universes
IDW has been committed to the Godzilla franchise, but a decade of material makes it hard for a potential reader to know where to start, even if it is mostly miniseries. But what IDW Publishing has planned for Godzilla sounds like the right approach. It's clear that IDW wants a clean start that welcomes all readers, not just the Godzilla diehards. Given the success Marvel has found with its relaunched Ultimate Universe and DC Comics' similar success with its Absolute line, that's honestly the best approach for IDW and Godzilla.
Though the details are few, it sounds like there are a lot of big ideas set for The New Heroes' universe, and for something that's been around as long as Godzilla has, bold new concepts are always welcome. Who knows what the creative minds involved have up their sleeves for IDW's relaunch of the King of the Monsters? But it seems like IDW Publishing has something really special lined up for old and new Godzilla fans next Free Comic Book Day.
Godzilla: The New Heroes Free Comic Book Day 2025 will be available on May 3rd, 2025 from IDW Publishing.
