Godzilla and Other Kaiju Have Stomped Through Human History

Mothra's Role In History Was Practically Biblical.

Since acquiring the license to produce comics based on the Godzilla franchise, IDW has created some truly unique titles based on the KIng of the Monsters, as well as other kaiju. Both Here There Be Dragons miniseries transport Godzilla, Mothra and others to different historical times, including feudal Japan and the Biblical era. These books not only prove the versatility of the Godzilla concept, but also weave the history of the kaiju with that of the real world. Humanity and kaiju have been influencing each other for millenia, and Here There Be Dragons explores this relationship.

As revealed in Sons of Giants #3, Mothra played a huge role in one of the Bible’s biggest stories.

As revealed in Sons of Giants #3, Mothra played a huge role in one of the Bible’s biggest stories. In the book of Exodus, in the Old Testament, Moses convinces the pharaoh, after a series of increasingly devastating plagues, to free the Israelites he had enslaved. Pharaoh relented, but had second thoughts. The story in Sons of Giants #3 largely syncs up with the Biblical : Pharaoh’s men corner Moses and his people, but a mysterious force parts the Red Sea long enough to allow them to slip through. When the lake is sealed again, the Egyptian forces are annihilated.

Three Major Religions Owe Mothra A Debt of Gratitude

Mothra is the perfect kaiju to work such feats, as she has a closer relationship with humans than Godzilla or Rodan. Mothra communicates with the rest of the world through psychic human twins. These twins help anchor Mothra further to the human world. Furthermore, Mothra is seen as humanity’s protector. While Godzilla’s heroic status shifts from version to version, Mothra is almost always one of the good guys. In 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Mothra indirectly helped save Earth from KIng Ghidorah: she gave Godzilla the energy and power he needed to overpower Ghidorah.

The Pharaoh immediately went back on his promise to free the slaves, which may have been what inspired Mothra to take action and help Moses.

In Sons of Giants #3, Mothra once again intervenes in a horrible situation on humanity’s behalf. Moses wanted nothing more than to lead his people out of bondage and to freedom. He did not want to conquer Egypt, nor did he want any material goods: he wanted freedom. The Pharaoh immediately went back on his promise to free the slaves, which may have been what inspired Mothra to take action and help Moses. The incident in the Red Sea resulted in hundreds of Egyptian deaths, and allowed Moses to press on in his quest to lead his people to a new land.

IDW is set to make history with Mothra's first ever ongoing solo comic series, and artist Matt Frank has thoughts on the character's success.

Today, Moses is a highly revered figure in three major religions, and it is thanks to Mothra that he survived to gain his sterling reputation. Here There Be Dragons has given Godzilla fans a much deeper look into how kaiju impact humans. They destroy cities and cause many deaths. Yet Mothra, with her more gentle demeanor, instead inspires humanity. The of Mothra parting the Red Sea calls her an “angel,” and after helping inspire Judaism, Christianity and Islam, it is a title that fits her perfectly.
