The Good Place has proven to be an absolute hit on Netflix, with the comedy that focuses on the afterlife truly being hilarious. Unlike many comedic shows which can be hit and miss, or simply not funny, The Good Place consistently provides laughs.
The show doesn't just rely on comedy though, as it is also educational and emotional at the same time. With a fairly small cast, the characters have been created in great detail and that has allowed fans to really invest in them. However, at the heart of the matter is comedy. At the end of the day, if the show wasn't funny, people would have quickly stopped watching and that hasn't been the case. But with so many great characters, who is the funniest?
Simone Garnett
While all the characters on the show have some moments of humor, when it comes to the main characters Simone Garnett certainly has the least. The main reason for that is because she is the most serious character on the entire show, both on Earth and in The Good Place.
Constantly judging everything and everyone, there are times when she can be quite an unlikeable character. That also isn't helped by the fact that fans do not want her to end up with Chidi in a romantic way. However, that doesn't mean she's not funny at all, as some of Simone's one-liners really are unexpectedly brilliant.
Shawn
Shawn is the shows evil character who is literally the devil, attempting to bring the four main characters to the Bad Place. Shawn isn't a particularly hilarious character, but that is mainly because of what he is supposed to represent, he's not there to be bringing the laughs.
Shawn sums up everything that is bad and evil with the afterlife and cracking jokes isn't what he is about. On the odd occasion where he does make a joke it often tends to be about torture, or it's a silly joke about poop or something similar to that. He has rare moments of comedy, but isn't very consistent in that, as his character is so dry.
Bad Janet
Much like Shawn, Bad Janet is one of the only evil characters in the show as she plays the opposite version to Good Janet. Having the power to summon things at the drop of a hat, she is exactly the same as her good counterpart, except she lives in the Bad Place.
Much like Shawn, a lot of Bad Janet's jokes are stemmed from quite silly topics and goofy moments that would make children laugh. That seems to be the purpose of that section of characters, in that none of them are actually purposefully funny like they can be in The Good Place. Bad Janet does provide a few good one-liners though, bringing some firey comebacks when needed.
Chidi Anagonye
Chidi is one of the main characters on the show, but out of the core group, he is the least funny. This is mainly because of his character's personality, which is very anxious, jumpy, and generally incredibly nervous. However, his role is to really bring the educational aspect to the show in a charming manner.
Chidi can be funny though, mainly unintentionally, however. His funny moments normally come when he's in a sheer state of panic which is always about something totally mundane, which makes the entire situation even funnier.
Judge Gen
It's a shame that Judge Gen isn't in the show more, as she could very easily have landed a higher place on the list with some more screen time. Every scene she's in is a scene-stealer, and a large reason for that is the comic abilities of Maya Rudolph who plays her.
Whenever she pops up, Judge Gen brings tons of funny moments with her. She has an incredible personality that enables her to fire back at anyone with amazing one-liners and tons of pop culture references, she is just one badass, hilarious character.
Michael
Most of the time, Michael is funny unintentionally. His responses and reactions to different things that the humans say is hilarious as he plays up the fact that he has no clue what they're going on about. Which makes it even funnier when he does pretend, or know various things, normally which he picks up from the group.
He is just incredibly loveable, despite the fact he is a former demon himself. His desire to fit in and try to improve his life does lead to some very funny moments which has quickly helped him become a fan favorite for many people.
Tahani Al-Jamil
Tahani follows all of the stereotypes of someone who is posh, rich and famous, yet somehow she is incredibly relatable and likeable at the same time. Perhaps it's because she's actively trying to do better, but she certainly is a lot of fun on the show.
It is through the fact she had a life totally unlike anyone else in the group that is she is so funny. Tahani makes jokes about hanging out with celebrities and hosting lavish dinner parties, not understanding the trivial issues the rest went through on Earth. Normally having hilarious responses to matters and often getting overexaggerated, she is truly a tremendous character.
Good Janet
Good Janet is involved in the show far more than her Bad counterpart, which is one of the reasons she ranks much higher. But even though they're very similar characters, the Good Janet is far funnier, mainly because she spends so much time with the rest of the main group.
Her witty, and very dry comebacks are always absolutely hilarious, The "I am not a girl" line is never not funny, and overall she is just a great character. Because she technically isn't a human, some of her comedy is slightly different, but her ability to bounce off every single character is something that few others have.
Jason Mendoza
In every comedy show, there seems to be a 'dumb' character, and in The Good Place, it's Jason Mendoza. Of course, he has the heart and courage, and he brings the looks as well. But it is in his humor where Jason really stands out as he comes out with some amazing things.
Some of the plans he comes up with or stories he tells from his life are so utterly ridiculous, yet absolutely hilarious at the same time. He doesn't have a clue what's going on half of the time, which makes it funny, even when he does say something that makes sense.
Eleanor Shellstrop
Eleanor Shellstrop is the main character in The Good Place and she is also the funniest. Mainly because she is focused on the most, but also because of the immense level of charm and love that Kristen Bell brings to the performance, Eleanor is an amazing character.
The reason she's the funniest is that Eleanor can be hilarious in so many different ways. From physical comedy to lame Dad jokes to quick one-liners to ing in with some of Jason's ridiculous behavior. Eleanor really can do it all.
She also has all the heart of the show as well and is the character people can connect with the most. Eleanor is portrayed as the everyday person, which is what the viewers are, therefore her style of comedy is easy to connect with.
