WARNING: Contains Spoilers for ABSOLUTE GREEN LANTERN #2!
DC’s Absolute Universe has struck again, this time with the shocking death of another Justice League hero. While the Absolute Flash storyline already confirmed the demise of Barry Allen, Absolute Green Lantern now delivers yet another major casualty. However, not everything may be as it appears, leaving ample room for speculation.
Al Ewing, Jahnoy Lindsay, and Lucas Gattoni’s Absolute Green Lantern returns with its second installment, delivering more mind-bending developments in this sci-fi horror-esque narrative that raises more questions than it answers.
In this issue, readers shift between past and present as Ewing picks up with the reunion of Jo Mullein and Hal Jordan, while also exploring the past through Abin Sur’s first with Earth. It’s during this flashback that fans are hit with a shocking revelation: Guy Gardner, who was only briefly mentioned in the previous issue, is now apparently dead, courtesy of Abin Sur.

As previously stated, the flashback centers on Abin Sur and his first with Earth, which takes place in the town of Evergreen. It is here that fans receive their first proper introduction to the Absolute version of Guy Gardner, who, in this universe, serves as the sheriff of Evergreen and takes the lead in approaching Abin Sur. Surprisingly, Gardner presents himself as a fairly level-headed cop, making an effort to de-escalate the situation and understand what Abin Sur wants. However, the little that Abin Sur says offers few answers, as the alien appears to be stuck repeating a select few phrases with only minor variations.
Among the cryptic information Abin Sur provides is the claim that he exists on “the green level of light,” implying that there are multiple levels of light on the spectrum where different beings may exist. From there, he repeatedly states, “Judgment is in progress. Be without fear,” while using his green light to seemingly carry out his evaluations. His first target appears to be Guy Gardner, and the sequence ends with Abin Sur declaring, “Guy Gardner has been judged,” before seemingly blasting and killing him with no further explanation. While not explicitly confirmed, it appears that Gardner is the latest casualty in the Absolute Universe.
Wait! There’s Still a Slim Chance that Guy Gardner Is Alive
Cover B Juliet Nneka Variant for Absolute Green Lantern #2 (2025)
Although it appears Guy Gardner was disintegrated by green light and both Hal Jordan and Jo Mullein believe he is dead, that may not be the case. His fate remains uncertain, as there is little understanding of how Abin Sur’s green light actually works. It is possible Abin Sur transported Guy rather than killed him. Until Abin Sur explicitly confirms his death, readers cannot be certain. Still, with no evidence that Guy is alive and both Hal and Jo treating him as dead, Absolute Green Lantern can, for now, claim the distinction of killing off a major Justice League character.
