The CEO of Rockstar Games' parent company gave insight in an interview on why there isn't a concrete release date for Grand Theft Auto 6 yet. With the game still lingering on an uncertain 2025 release window, players are eager to know when this beloved follow-up to the esteemed Grand Theft Auto 5 is set to finally come out. As only one trailer has been shared so far, fans of the series are unsure of what to expect from the game, especially as we appear to draw closer to its release.

Speaking to Bloomberg in a video interview (via RockstarINTEL), Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick explained the reasoning behind the lack of a release date announcement for GTA 6, stating, "We think you need to create enormous anticipation on the one hand." Zelnick added that "it takes a long time to develop these big, robust experiences," saying that Rockstar Games "seeks perfection in what they do and perfection is a pretty high bar." Essentially, Take-Two and Rockstar want to continue generating hype for GTA 6 while trying to meet big expectations for what is undoubtedly going to be a huge release.

Take-Two Interactive Is Firm On Its Release Window

Despite the lack of a solid release date, Take-Two Interactive doubled down earlier this year in an investor call that GTA 6 is still on track for a fall 2025 launch. There's currently no reason to believe that GTA 6 won't meet this projection from Take-Two, but there is still very little information for fans to work with.

Since the announcement of the game in 2022, only one trailer for GTA 6 has come out. In the Bloomberg interview, Zelnick described the company's strategy of "[providing] marketing materials relatively close to the release window" to create excitement and balance it with "unmet anticipation." The drip feed of GTA 6 information is very intentional, and it's likely that the desperation from fans for more information is by design.

Is This The Right Move From Take-Two?

Questions Arise From This Cautious Release Strategy

Take-Two's choice to leave the release date for GTA 6 open-ended isn't perfect, creating a number of potential issues. While they're correct that fan anticipation is high, prospective players are also growing impatient and frustrated, which is indirectly leading to more supposed leaks and rumors about GTA 6. These snippets of information hamper the tight-lipped campaign that Take-Two is hoping for and take away the limelight from the people who deserve it.

That's not to say there aren't valid reasons for waiting, especially as Baldur's Gate 3 arguably soured the launch of Starfield by delivering such a high-class experience right before Bethesda's newest IP came out, it's clear that companies are conscious of how other competitors could affect their game. But as we get closer to fall, Take-Two can't take much longer to start building up to GTA 6 — whenever it comes out.
