WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for the Hacks season 4 finale.

The final two episodes of Hacks season 4's penultimate episode, Bob tells Deborah to fire Ava.

Deborah refuses to fire Ava even though she had tried to get rid of Ava in the early episodes of Hacks season 4. Deborah's true feelings for Ava come out when things get cutthroat with Bob, forcing her to choose between her close bond with Ava and the longevity of her late-night show. Deborah's late-night show was a monumental moment for both her and for TV history as she became the first woman to ever host a mainstream late-night show on a major network. Several Hacks season 4's guest stars celebrated this achievement before Deborah takes her final stand and quits live on-air.

Hacks Shockingly Ended Deborah's Late-Night Show Story After Just 1 Season

It Had Been Built Up All Season 3 Only To Be Discarded To Season 4

Deborah finally achieved her childhood dream of hosting a late-night show at the very end of Hacks season 3. By the penultimate episode of Hacks season 4, however, she quits because Bob Lipka told her she had to fire Ava. It appeared as though Deborah was going to obey Bob's command, just like she had been doing throughout the entire season, which led to her having the controversial movie star Ethan Summers as a guest on her show in the first place. Deborah's blunt comment about Summers' secret Snapchat started the fire, which Ava spread and Bob quickly tried to put out.

Ultimately, it was absolutely the right decision for Deborah to stand up for her morals and for Ava in Hacks season 4. That said, it's surprising that her late-night career was cut so short and will only be an exclusive Hacks season 4 narrative. Hacks was quickly emerging as the perfect replacement for HBO's other popular Hollywood-centric showbiz series, such as Entourage and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Now that Deborah and Ava will apparently be returning to Vegas over Los Angeles in a recently confirmed Hacks season 5, the show should be returning to its roots after making so many changes.

She & Ava Will Have To Get Creative & Perhaps Embark In A New Medium

After Deborah's stand-up stint in Singapore, the false report of her death makes her decide to go back home and do some "rewriting." After Deborah drunkenly shooed Ava off the night before, Ava comes running to make sure she's still alive, avoiding what would have been an astounding and series-ending twist. Deborah still faces legal threats from Bob Lipka's elite team of lawyers, who have made it impossible for Deborah to perform live or even sell anything using her name and likeness due to an 18-month non-compete clause in her contract.

Perhaps Deborah would embark on taking on a more long-term project to settle the score with Bob, such as a biography or, better yet, a biopic.

This raises a major Hacks season 5 question: What can Deborah actually do to "rewrite her story" if she technically isn't allowed to perform? Without knowing too many details of Deborah's contract, perhaps Deborah would embark on taking on a more long-term project to settle the score with Bob, such as a biography or, better yet, a biopic.

Hacks Season 4 Brilliantly Calls Back To Two Missing Season 3 Characters

Hacks season 4, episode 9, "A Slippery Slope," calls back two season 3 ing characters who had seemingly been abandoned up to this point.

Perhaps Deborah and Ava will write the screenplay of Deborah's life, particularly during her comeuppance during the 1980s when she was wrongfully accused of burning down her house by her ex-husband. Jimmy already has his hand in producing features thanks to a Fatty Arbuckle biopic, so maybe Deborah and Ava will go that direction in Hacks season 5.
