The original is one of Adam Sandler's best comedies, and now Happy Gilmore 2 is arriving in 2025. Happy Gilmore was a key movie that, alongside Billy Madison, helped make Adam Sandler a comedy leading man in the '90s. The 1996 hit featured Sandler as the title character, a failed ice hockey player who discovers an unlikely talent for golf. He uses this skill to win prize money that would help his grandmother get her house back, but first, he has to beat a jealous rival and learn to control his explosive anger.

Happy Gilmore made great use of Sandler's comic skills and featured a fantastic ing cast, including Christopher McDonald as Gilmore's rival Shooter McGavin, Carl Weathers, and an uncredited Ben Stiller as evil retirement home orderly, Hal. The success of the film led to bigger movies for Adam Sandler like The Wedding Singer and The Waterboy, but Happy Gilmore is still considered one of his funniest films. The chances of a sequel never seemed possible considering the first movie's conclusive ending, but now Sandler is back in Happy Gilmore 2.

Though the movie won't be hitting theaters, it certainly has the perfect summer movie vibe that made many of Sandler's early hits so successful.

After months of waiting for an official release date announcement, Netflix finally revealed when the Adam Sandler sequel will debut on the platform. Earlier in 2025, it was revealed that Happy Gilmore 2 would premiere on July 25, 2025, though that date was seemingly announced accidentally. Netflix has since confirmed the accuracy of that date, and the follow-up to Sandler's blockbuster original will indeed be a summer release. Though the movie won't be hitting theaters, it certainly has the perfect summer movie vibe that made many of Sandler's early hits so successful.

Happy Gilmore 2 Is A Unique Addition To His Filmography

Though the trend has changed somewhat in the last decade or so, Adam Sandler was a Hollywood anomaly in that he rarely returned for sequels. 2013's Grown Ups 2 was his first sequel appearance, and he would follow it up with two sequels to Hotel Transylvania and a follow-up to his Netflix film, Murder Mystery. Nevertheless, Sandler has never pushed for sequels to his classic films from the 1990s and 2000s, and Happy Gilmore 2 never seemed possible because of the original's cult classic status.

However, with legacy sequels proving to be popular with audiences, Happy Gilmore particularly stood out as the most likely candidate for another installment. The character offered the most depth, and the sports comedy angle made it relatively easy to dream up a new story for Happy to find himself in. All that said, the chances of a Happy Gilmore 2 seem pretty unlikely.

Who Will Return For The Sequel?

Sandler revealed in an August 2024 interview that NFL star Travis Kelce and Uncut Gems co-director Benny Safdie will have cameo roles.

Unfortunately, the cast of Happy Gilmore 2 would be noticeably different from the first because of some real-world developments in the three decades since its release. Sandler will be back on hand to reprise his role as former hockey player Happy Gilmore, but the rest of the cast is entirely contingent upon where the story of the prospective sequel decides to go. Other returns include Christopher McDonald as the villainous Shooter McGavin, and reporter-turned-love interest, Virginia Venit, played by Julie Bowen. Newcomer Margaret Qualley has been tapped to play an unknown role.

Happy Returns To Golfing After Years Away

Adam Sandler yells at a golf ball in Happy Gilmore

With the plot of Happy Gilmore resolved by the end of the film, the sequel is extremely open-ended and nearly anything can happen. Though Sandler has always been cagey about sequels, he did reveal an idea for Happy Gilmore 2's story in 2022, and that could shine a light on what his mysterious script is about. In the interview, Sandler mused about a potential sequel that catches up with Happy in his older years as he still grapples with his temper.

Early teasers and trailers have given a somewhat clearer picture of what's to come in Happy Gilmore 2, and it essentially sticks closely to Sandler's original idea. Happy is pressed back into the world of golf after years away, but his old coping mechanisms to control his anger aren't working as well as they used to. Now, he must devise a new way to keep everything from getting under his skin, including the return of his nemesis, Shooter McGavin. There will also likely be some other imeptus for the plot, but that hasn't been revealed yet.

As a Christmas gift, Netflix dropped a short teaser for Happy Gilmore 2 just in time for the holidays in late 2024. The brief first look opens with Happy taking one of his familiar running drives, before cutting to some of the movie's many celebrity cameos. Julie Bowen's Virginia gives Happy some words of encouragement, and it's clear that their relationship is strong. Finally, Happy squares off with his old nemesis, Shooter McGavin, after they accidentally meet in a cemetery.

Netflix dropped the first real trailer for the sequel in March 2025, and Happy Gilmore 2 looks to be a strong follow-up. The teaser opens with Happy seeing his bust among other greats like Tiger Woods and Arnold Palmer, but the likeness is anything but flattering. After revealing he hasn't golfed in years, Happy returns to the course and imagines a new happy place. The trailer then shows quick cuts of various new and returning characters, including Shooter McGavin and Virginia. In the final scene, Happy's overpowered drive punches a hole in a golf simulator.
