Summary

  • The Harry Potter TV reboot can correct past mistakes, offering more depth to characters, fan-favorite storylines, and accurate details like Harry's green eyes.
  • The show should embrace diversity by casting a Black actor as Hermione Granger and giving the Weasleys' older siblings their due screen time and character arcs.
  • The reboot should focus on better characterization for Voldemort, epic Quidditch matches, accurate wizard attire, and proper redemption arcs for Draco Malfoy and Dudley Dursley.

The Harry Potter reboot has a lot to live up to in of fan expectations, but it also has the opportunity to deliver on things the movies didn't. Although the Harry Potter movies are often regarded as modern classics, there's no denying they had their flaws. Like many page-to-screen adaptations, they cut the smaller details from the source material and overlooked some less crucial storylines. That was inevitable given they needed to fit the story into a movie's runtime.

Harry Potter can give the story more room to breathe, righting the wrongs of the films. It can flesh out characters and relationships with more depth and include fan-favorite storylines cut from the original adaptation. If done right, a reboot can even improve upon the books. No one was asking for another Harry Potter adaptation, but it opens the door for a new approach to an iconic franchise.

A YA reboot had the potential to be a worthy competitor for HBO's Harry Potter but a creative decision behind it has sadly made it less exciting.

15 A Kinder Portrayal Of Ron Weasley

Deliver A More-Rounded Ron To The Harry Potter Max Series

Ron Weasley rounds out the main Harry Potter trio, and many fans feel the movies didn't do the character justice. The films often gave Ron's best moments and lines to other characters, only keeping his more unsavory scenes from the books. The Harry Potter reboot has the chance to adapt Ron as he appears on the page and it can make him a bit more palatable for modern audiences. Ron isn't often the favorite of the golden trio, but he brings more to the table than the films showed and he deserves better in Max's Harry Potter series.

14 The Right Eye Color For Harry And Lily Potter

Harry & Lily's Eyes Were Different Colors In The Movies

Harry Potter looks just like his father, but he's told repeatedly throughout the Harry Potter series that he has his mother's eyes. One of the Harry Potter movies' laziest errors was to keep this frequent line but cast actors with completely different eye colors. This became a running joke among Harry Potter fans, but the TV reboot should attempt to rectify this mistake. It's easy enough to ensure Harry and Lily both have their signature green eyes — even if the actors need to use lenses to do it.

13 A Black Actor As Hermione Granger

The Cursed Child Already Made This Change

The main cast of Harry Potter isn't as diverse as it should be, and the TV reboot should take a leaf out of the Cursed Child's book. Fans pointed out that Hermione Granger can be read as being Black, and the show should cast a Black actor to play the role. While the Cursed Child stageplay faced some backlash, it was a nice way to add diversity after a predominantly white movie cast. This would be one way to improve upon the book's less inclusive cast of characters, and Hermione could be one of many changes.

12 More In-Depth Characterization Of Voldemort

Voldemort Needs More Quality Screen Time

Collage of young Tom Riddle and Lord Voldemort

Voldemort is something of a one-note villain, and even the flashbacks to his Tom Riddle days don't paint the picture of a well-rounded character. If Harry Potter's reboot hopes to compete with modern fantasy shows, it will need to do a better job of characterizing its main antagonist. Voldemort doesn't need a redemption arc, but he does need more compelling motivations for his crimes. The time that Voldemort was in the movies was minimal. The Max series needs to capitalize on the longer running time for the main villain.

11 Better Quidditch Matches

Quidditch is a huge part of the Wizarding World and the Harry Potter books, but it doesn't get much screen time in the movies, especially the later ones. Even more unforgivable, the Quidditch World Cup is less epic in the Goblet of Fire movie than it is in the book. With a big budget and more time, the Harry Potter reboot can deliver more Quidditch matches, making them events in and of themselves. No one's watching for the sport alone, but fans will appreciate more thought and energy going into the Quidditch matches.

10 A Wardrobe Update For The Wizards

The Max Series Can Standardize Wizards' Clothing

Wizards have a very different wardrobe than Muggles in the Harry Potter books, but the movie's approach to clothing is confusing. While some directors put the Hogwarts students in wizard's robes, others opted for casual attire, blending their look with that of Muggles. If the Harry Potter reboot wants to get this right, it will need to plan the wizards' attire with care, aligning it more closely with the source material than the former adaptations. It also might be nice to modernize the uniforms as well.

9 Screen Time For The Older Weasleys

Bring Charlie & Percy's Stories To The Max Series

Fred, George, Arthur, Percy, Molly, Ron, and Ginny Weasley from Harry Potter

The younger siblings in the Weasley family get plenty of screen time in the Harry Potter movies, as they all attend Hogwarts with Harry. However, the older siblings — Percy, Charlie, and Bill — are mostly overlooked in the film adaptations. Each has character arcs in the books, and the TV reboot should make it a point to bring these storylines to the small screen. Charlie's work with magical creatures would make an interesting subplot, and Percy's feud with his family deserves a place in the coming series.

8 A Marauder Flashback Episode (Or Multiple)

The Marauders Were Overlooked In The Movies

The Marauders in Harry Potter

Most Harry Potter fans would love to see an entire Marauder series, but the TV reboot should deliver a few flashback episodes centered on these beloved characters. Harry's father and his friends certainly have enough of a backstory to fill an entire hour-long installment. They could carry a whole season — though that might detract from the main story. Whatever the reboot does, it should dedicate more than a brief flashback to Peter Pettigrew's betrayal and James and Lily's tragic fates.

7 Proper Redemption Arcs For Draco Malfoy And Dudley Dursley

The Minor Antagonists Deserve Redemption

Both Draco Malfoy and Dudley Dursley get small moments of redemption in the Harry Potter books and movies. However, the TV reboot should take this further, allowing the characters to fully make up for the things they've done. There's more to both characters than meets the eye, and fans are eager to see new sides to these familiar faces. Dudley's portrayal in the Harry Potter books is problematic in hindsight, and Slytherin needs more complex characters in its ranks, with Draco such a rich character to explore more.

6 Adam Driver As A Less Sympathetic Severus Snape

A Perfect Replacement For Alan Rickman

It's going to be difficult for the Harry Potter reboot to recast Severus Snape, especially after the late Alan Rickman's iconic performance in the role. There's one actor many fans would like to see replace him, and that's Adam Driver. The Star Wars actor would make a solid Snape, especially with his experience capturing a layered antagonist in the Star Wars movies. It would also be nice for the coming TV show to focus more on Snape's flaws, as he's somewhat less sympathetic in the source material.
