The J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books swept the U.K. and overseas, it was only a matter of time before they became the genre institution that they are. Now, the legendary Warner Bros. movies populate the minds of millions of fans with visuals of what the book characters look like, but that could change. The Max TV show will set a new standard, and Voldemort will be key here.
While Ralph Fiennes aced his turn as Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter movies, it is now time to consider how this role could be elaborated on. The Harry Potter TV show must bring something new to the table and also remain faithful to the books. However, there is no doubt that Fiennes' Voldemort will never be forgotten and will play a huge role in inspiring the next iteration of the villain. That's why I'm confident that my dreamcast of Cillian Murphy as Voldemort makes sense, and I have more hope than ever after Warner Bros.' recent comments.
WB's Response To Cillian Murphy's Casting Gives Me More Hope It Could Happen
Warner Bros. Responded To The Cillian Murphy Rumors
Harry Potter readers and viewers have been fancasting Cillian Murphy as Lord Voldemort for a long time, and Channing Dungey recently made some comments that hint that it could happen. Dungey, the chairperson and CEO of Warner Bros. Television Group, said to Deadline: "We are still weighing a couple of different options." When pushed on Murphy as Voldemort, Dungey repeated "no comment" three times, suggesting that there may well be something to say in that department. While Murphy hasn't been ruled out, my ideal Voldemort remains a possibility.
Cillian Murphy Would Be Perfect For Voldemort (& It's Better Than Him Being Quirrell)
Murphy Would Make The Voldemort Role His Own
As one of Harry Potter's main characters, Lord Voldemort is critical to the success of the TV show, and Cillian Murphy would be invaluable in making him work. Although far from demonic in appearance, Murphy's angular good looks could feasibly create an unnervingly familiar image of the renowned villain, though the TV show may depart from the previous character design and choose a new one. More to the point, Murphy's experience is ideal for Voldemort. Having proved he can get the audience to root for him even as a criminal, Murphy's magnetism has always, bizarrely, translated well to the villains he plays.
As the protagonist of Peaky Blinders, Thomas Shelby was a charismatic gangster whom Murphy played to perfection. As the Scarecrow in The Dark Knight and even the mysterious Oppenheimer, Murphy demonstrated that the screen is all his while he plays someone sinister and troubled. There was some talk that Murphy could play Professor Quirrell, but this would be a bit of a letdown given the character's brief role and the far grander presence of Voldemort that the actor would so excel at portraying. Now that the Harry Potter remake's Quirrell actor is confirmed to not be Murphy, he is free for Voldemort in Harry Potter.
