The HBO Harry Potter show will look to adapt the books in a more comprehensive way than the wildly successful movies.
HBO has announced that Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout have been cast as Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley. All the young actors appear to be new to the world of television. Stanton, who will play Hermione, took on the title role of Matilda Wormwood in the musical Matilda in London’s West End. McLaughlin, set to play Harry Potter, has one credit on IMDb, an comedy film called Grow. Stout, the future Ron Weasley, does not appear to have any previous screen acting credits. Check out the press release from HBO below:
After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione, and Ron. The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen. We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It's been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there.
What This Means For The Harry Potter Show
The Full Cast Is Taking Shape
The new golden trio will no doubt have quite the acting education on set with actors like John Lithgow (Dumbledore), Paapa Essiedu (Snape), Janet McTeer, (McGonagall), and Nick Frost (Hagrid) playing their Hogwarts mentors. As many of the main characters have now been cast, the series is beginning to take shape. Much like Radcliffe, Watson, and Grint, the new acting trio is entering the Wizarding World as unknown performers, but will be surrounded by acting veterans.
The HBO show has an opportunity to develop parts of the books that were previously skipped and dive deeper into the lore.
With the "tens of thousands of children who auditioned" for the roles, it is exciting to see that the HBO series is moving forward so quickly. As each season is expected to cover an entire novel, the young trio have years to grow with their roles and develop as actors as the series progresses. While the Harry Potter film series remains beloved, the HBO show has an opportunity to develop parts of the books that were previously skipped and dive deeper into the lore.
Our Take On The Harry Potter Casting
It's Good To Start Fresh With Unknown Actors
Every member of the Harry Potter cast will inevitably be compared to whoever previously played the role. While the Hogwarts professors are all established performers, it is best to cast the leads as unknowns. Expectations will be high, but with limited credits for the new trio, the audience can be introduced to them without any preconceived notions. Especially for young viewers who may only just be reading the books, it will be an exciting journey to follow this new trio throughout HBO's Harry Potter.

Harry Potter is HBO's remake of the iconic Wizarding World film series that consisted of eight films between 2001 and 2011. Each season adapts a book from JK Rowling's popular series and provides more book-accurate details than the movies did.
