Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Haunting of Bly Manor!
The Haunting of Hill House. With a set of returning characters like Victoria Pedretti, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Henry Thomas, Kate Siegel, and of course, Gugino, Mike Flanagan has effectively created a horror anthology series embedded with emotional themes like love and loss.
The Haunting's latest installment focused on a young American named Dani (Pedretti) who took a job as an au pair in England during the late '80s. Originally hired to look after a man's nephew and niece at the Bly estate, Dani quickly got swept up into the mysterious happenings plaguing the property. In time, the ghost story emerged into a series of tragic love stories, especially when it came to Dani's own feelings for Jamie, Bly's resident gardener. After fully embracing their feelings for one another, the pair's time was ultimately cut short when Dani's sacrifice to save young Flora meant switching places with Viola to become the new Lady of the Lake.
As it turned out, the woman telling the long tale about Bly Manor at the 2007 wedding was, indeed, Jamie years after she lost Dani. When the season opened with an older Jamie, she was seen waking up in a chair inside of a hotel room. She then looked at her reflection in the tub filled with water before making her way to the rehearsal dinner. The significance of this sequence, however, wasn't unveiled until the final moments of The Haunting of Bly Manor's finale. Not only did the plot come full circle, but it proved how far Jamie continued to go to reunite with Dani.
Despite the fact that Jamie was attending Flora's wedding, the Wingrave kids no longer had any memory of their encounters at Bly Manor. Jamie was one of the few that ed everything, including Dani's tragic fate. As she watched Flora enjoy her big day, Jamie snuck out early, returning to her hotel room as Sheryl Crow's "I Shall Believe" played. Jamie then filled the tub while also checking her reflection in the water sitting in the sink, hoping to catch not her own reflection, but Dani's. With no success, she once again positioned a chair to face the room's entrance before leaving the door cracked open. The room was in the same position as it was in the first episode, proving that this was a normal occurrence for Jamie.
As the particular song featured lyrics like "open the door and show me your face tonight," Jamie did exactly that in the hope that she would catch a glimpse of Dani, even if just for a moment. As she sat in the chair, she fell asleep, but shortly after, Dani's hand could be seen on Jamie's shoulder. While Jamie never gave up on seeing Dani again based on her actions night after night, her true love seemed to be there the entire time. With that, The Haunting of Bly Manor came to an end, but there was no reason to believe that Jamie never stopped waiting for Dani.
