After a losing fight to gambling addiction, David hits rock bottom and decimates his personal life in the process. He’d do anything for one last chance to get on the straight and narrow and set things right. He may just be in luck, if you can call it that. Through the grapevine David learns of a heist–one involving a tunnel system that no one knows better than the former NYC subway veteran. One last job and he’s home free. All he needs to do is make it out alive.

Writer/artist David Lapham is no stranger to the crime/noir genre, as his long-running indie comic Stray Bullets will attest. Underheist sounds like a fine addition to his and his wife Maria’s long-running body of work across nearly every major comic publisher out there. As Lapham states:

If you know our work then you know that we traditionally come at the crime genre from a very non-traditional angle with very non-traditional noir protagonists. I often call them “domestic noirs”. But with Underheist, we had this idea for a more straightforward story, centered around maybe the most traditional crime trope—the heist. Of course, we can’t do anything straightforward for more than five minutes, and very quickly all these twisted, nightmarish ideas started to flood in…

The first issue of Stray Bullets came out in 1995, published by the Laphams through their own imprint, El Capitan Books. Telling the story of group of various lowlifes and wastrels over the course of several decades, that original run went for forty issues. After a long hiatus in the 2000s while David Lapham worked on various projects for Marvel and DC, Stray Bullets finally returned in 2014 through Image Comics, which has been the home for Lapham’s signature title ever since.

Although he’s best known for Stray Bullets, Lapham has lent his pen to various comics throughout the years, whether it was for high-profile projects like a run on Detective Comics or his own creator-owned work such as Young Liars and Silverfish. Whether Underheist will have as long a run as Stray Bullets remains to be seen, but fans of David and Maria Lapham certainly won’t want to miss the new BOOM! Studios series.

Underheist #1 is on sale December 13th from BOOM! Studios.
