Here has been negatively reviewed by critics and audiences and is currently sitting at a 36% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

In an interview with The New York Times, Wright and Hanks addressed the negative reception the film has been getting. Wright defended the movie, stating that it is a simple but beautiful movie that's profoundly real and human, while Hanks explained that the response could be cynical only by "the lowest common denominator." Check out their full comments below:

Wright: It is so simple and beautiful and real and human. We all have experienced something in this movie.

Hanks: I remain driven by this never-ending curiosity I have, about how it is true that good things happen to bad people and bad things happen to good people.

What The Negative Reviews Mean For Here's Prospects

The Film follows up Zemeckis' experiments with new technologies

While the performances of its lead Here cast received some praise, many critics took issue with Zemeckis experimenting with new technologies again. In this case, characters are de-aged and face-swapped through a brand-new generative artificial intelligence technology called Metaphysic Live. The use of such a program caused much controversy in the lead-up to its release, but the results weren't as fruitful as Zemeckis might have hoped regarding audience and critical reactions.

Robert Zemeckis' Here uses all-new VFX technology to de-age Tom Hanks and Robin Wright — here's how the technology's A.I. feature works.

This, however, follows up Zemeckis's attempt to push the boundaries of new technologies ever since the release of 2005's The Polar Express, which was met with mixed reviews. While some of his newer movies received praise, such as 2012's Flight and 2015's The Walk, many of his recent directorial crafts that attempt to bring new innovations to cinema have not been well-received. Here is the latest example from Zemeckis' filmography to have received such a negative reception, particularly in the wake of his last film, a remake of Disney's Pinocchio, which also starred Tom Hanks.

Here is based on the 2014 graphic novel of the same name by Richard McGuire, which focuses on the same location at different points in time.

Critics Aren't Enjoying This Era of Zemeckis' Filmography

Tom Hanks and Robin Wright embracing each other in Here (2024)

While Zemeckis continues bringing cinematic innovations, critics and audiences are not enjoying this new stage in his filmography. The director received numerous accolades in the 1980s and 1990s, with films such as the Back to the Future trilogy and Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, but has now failed to recapture the same magic and pushed filmmaking to horizons that weren't possible at the time of their release. With most of the Forrest Gump team back for the making of Here, Zemeckis thought he'd be able to capture the same Oscar-winning acclaim but failed to realize that the 1994 film was a lightning-in-a-bottle event that could never be replicated.
