A24 horror films including Y2K, The Front Room, MaXXXine, and I Saw The TV Glow.

Even before last year, A24 has been cultivating directorial talents in the horror genre for years. They were the distributor behind The Witch, a film that would go on to make stars out of both director Robert Eggers and actor Anya Taylor-Joy. The company added other indie auteurs to its growing list of directorial collaborators, including Clerks helmer Kevin Smith, who directed their wacky 2014 horror film Tusk. Another director that A24 had the honor of introducing to the world now has his biggest movie on Netflix, and it has been met with huge success.

Hereditary Did Well At The Box Office

Hereditary is now a Netflix hit. The horror film starring Toni Collette is the directorial debut of horror genius Ari Aster. Hereditary received rave reviews at the time of its release, receiving a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film is A24's fourth-highest-grossing movie at the worldwide box office, taking home over $80 million. The movie created a fan base for Aster, who impressed audiences again with Midsommar a year later, which made $46.7 million at the box office and has garnered a massive following.

Hereditary was beaten out on the charts today by Ad Vitam, Despicable Me 2, Despicable Me, Rush Hour, and Hotel Transylvania 2, but ranked above Rush Hour 2, The Age of Adaline, The Secret Life of Pets, and Rush Hour 3.

Our Take On Hereditary's Netflix Success

This Is Good News For Ari Aster

Hereditary's instant streaming success shows just how beloved the film is after all these years. This movie propelled A24 on the map as a major horror studio, shocking audiences with the brutality of its scenes and creative ending. This streaming performance also bodes well for Aster's next project, Eddington, which is a genre-bending Western featuring Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone, Joaquin Phoenix, and Austin Butler. Aster's strong box office record dipped with his third film Beau is Afraid, so hopefully the Hereditary buzz can give Eddington momentum to succeed.

A24 are one of the most exciting production companies releasing movies today, and they have been behind some of the most interesting and unnerving horrors of recent years. Hereditary is the first movie by director Ari Aster, who then went on to produce another spectacular A24 folk horror a year later, Midsommar. Hereditary is a supernatural horror film that follows the Graham family and after the death of Annie Graham's estranged mother, supernatural forces start messing with the family to disastrous consequences. Hereditary is a tense watch all the way through and there aren't many scary films that keep up the same level of uncomfortableness so strictly. Hereditary delivers on some truly terrifying stuff and there are scenes that will leave you speechless including a decapitation, Ari Aster is not afraid to leave the audience uncomfortable. Toni Collette has never played a more convincing role, and she plays the distraught mother to perfection and does at least 4 different things in this movie that will leave you in awe. There is a lingering supernatural feel as the movie crawls along, and the initial set up is slow and considered. The other characters are both superbly acted and directed, and they paint a brilliant picture of a mysterious family who have plenty of issues. The characters are fully realized, which makes their demise all the more effective. Although the set-up is slow and deliberate, the finish is anything but. The film crescendos in a full-frontal limb bending possession, without going totally over the top. The placement of horror in the dark make these scenes particularly creepy.
