A new Heroes sequel series has been confirmed to be in development. Premiering in 2006, the acclaimed NBC superhero drama series originally ran for four seasons a nd followed the lives of random individuals whose destinies and paths become intertwined after they discover they have superpowers following a mysterious solar eclipse. Following the sudden cancelation of the show in 2010, a follow-up miniseries titled Heroes Reborn was released in 2015, but it didn’t extend past season 1 as NBC also failed to renew the show for subsequent seasons.
Now, 9 years after the release of Heroes Reborn, Deadline reports that a new reboot of the classic superhero drama is in the works. The forthcoming reboot is being helmed by Tim Kring, the producer and screenwriter also responsible for the previous two Heroes installments, and the show is set to take place several years after the events of the original series.
Why Were The Two Previous Heroes Shows Canceled?
& What's In Store For The Next Era Of Heroes?
The first two seasons of Heroes received an assortment of accolades including Primetime Emmy Awards and notices from Writers Guild of America, which nominated the show for best new series of 2007, and they also both averaged about 13.8 million viewers during their time on TV. The two subsequent seasons, however, didn’t match the quality of the previous seasons, and it reflected in the viewership numbers which drastically reduced.

Between the drop in quality and viewership numbers, NBC decided to pull the plug on the original iteragtion of Heroes after just 4 seasons. A similar fate befell the reboot even though it’s currently considered a miniseries. The show’s release was never met with quite the same acclaim or numbers that the first couple of seasons of the original series got, and so, after just 13 episodes of the show, NBC also decided to ax the show.

Former Heroes Cast: Where Are They Now?
Heroes featured a lot of talented cast . Here's a look at some of the stars and where they are today.
Now, with a new Heroes reboot reportedly on the way, Kring, along with others working on the forthcoming show, would do well to take into why the previous installments of the franchise have been canceled. The original show was a staple of the 2000s and there are many fans of the franchise who would be looking to see a successful reboot of the show. However, it is imperative that season 1 of the forthcoming reboot, if it would go further than that, is stellar, as that would likely determine the fate of the show.
With hints that the Heroes series could include familiar faces from the past, the sequel may be able to tap into nostalgia for the original show while forging a bold new path forward. The media landscape has changed drastically since the original series launched and superheroes have become a dominant force in entertainment. Though interest in them has waned in recent years, there is still potential for Heroes Eclipsed to tap into that and create something new.
Heroes and Heroes Reborn are both available to stream on Prime Video.
