Kaitlin Olson’s New ABC Show Subverts Her It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia Role
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia's Kaitlin Olson has a new show on ABC, and her starring character subverts what's expected of the actor.
Screen Rant interviewed Amirah J about the family aspect of the series, Ava's role in Morgan's big decision, and what to expect as High Potential continues.
Amirah J Loves That Her High Potential Character Has Different Life Experiences
"I love getting to play something that's very removed from what I've been through."
Screen Rant: What were your thoughts when the show and the character of Ava were first pitched to you?
Amirah J: I loved when I was reading Ava because she's kind of this rebellious teenage girl who's bickering with her mom a lot, but I think she has a hidden soft spot. She's very emotional and has a guard up all the time, and I thought that'd be very interesting to tap into and discover with her character.
What do you think makes High Potential stand out from other procedurals you see on Network TV?
Amirah J: I think the family aspect of the show is very special and something that a lot of people will be able to relate to. You have the crime aspect and then the funniness of Kaitlin [Olson] and her comedic timing, but then you have the more dramatic stuff when you get to the family scenes and figuring out that dynamic, and I think that it's a very special dynamic.
When we first start the episode, your character definitely seems a bit disgruntled by her family's lifestyle. What has her life been like up until we see her in the pilot?
Amirah J: She is a 15-year-old girl and she has two younger siblings who are her half-siblings, and that's a big thing with Ava—her not knowing her father and her father leaving her 15 years ago. That's something that she is struggling to deal with because she feels out of place in her own family.
There's this missing piece that she doesn't know how to find, and also doesn't know if she wants to find. She doesn't know if she wants answers or if she doesn't. I love stepping into that because it's very different from my own life. I love getting to play something that's very removed from what I've been through.
Ava's Lack Of Clarity About Her Father Pushed Morgan To Accept The Consultant Job
"I think that she saw how it affected her daughter, not having her dad in her life, so she was like, 'I need to do everything in my power to help my daughter find this missing piece.'"
Ava feels that she got Morgan's worst qualities. Do you think she wishes she inherited her attention to detail, or does she find it to be disruptive for the family?
Amirah J: I think she almost wishes that she got it because she would feel as though she fits in with her family more and not like such an outsider. It would make her more like her mom and more like her siblings and she wouldn't have to try to fit in as much.
Ava believes that her father chose to leave the family, despite what Morgan says. Why does she have that mindset?
Amirah J: I think it's because there are so many unanswered questions because her mom doesn't have all the answers to give to her. She's just kind of like, "He didn't leave. I know something happened, I just don't know what," and Ava's kind of just like, "You're crazy. He left us. There's no other explanation. There's no other answers that anyone can give." And the fact that it's been 15 years and no one has found answers [makes her feel] like he just decided to leave. That's what happened in Ava's mind.
The big moment in the pilot that sets the stage is Morgan doesn't just take the job—she's going to use it to try and find Ava's dad. How do you think Morgan and Ava's conversation at the end of the episode fed into that decision?
Amirah J: I think Ava is one of the few people who can get Morgan to such an emotional state, because Morgan—she's always on the go. She has a lot going on in her mind. But I feel like when she's with her daughter, it's very intense and they bring out a different side of each other. And so I think that she saw how it affected her daughter not having her dad in her life, so she was like, "I need to do everything in my power to help my daughter find this missing piece in her life."
Ava And Morgan's Relationship Will Grow As High Potential Season 1 Continues
"It's less of Ava having her guard up all the time, and she starts to really be communicative with her mom."
How was working with Kaitlin Olson and building that mother-daughter relationship onscreen?
Amirah J: It's been incredible. She really is such a talented actress, and I'm learning so much from working with her. She's also just very motherly and nurturing in general. She always is kind of protective of us on set, which is nice. She's great. And I feel like as we progressed and continued filming more and more episodes, the chemistry just kept getting better and better.
What can you tease about their relationship going forward? How is Morgan's new job and the search going to affect Ava?
Amirah J: At first, Ava's kind of dismissive about it, like, "You're working with the police? What is this? What are you doing?" But I feel like as this season goes on, Ava and Morgan's relationship really grows. It's less of Ava having her guard up all the time, and she starts to really be communicative with her mom and express her emotions and how she feels as the season continues. I think it's a very beautiful story that is displayed.
The show just started, so there are obviously many different places to go, but have you thought of storylines that you'd like to see explored for Ava?
Amirah J: Yes, actually. I've talked to the showrunner, Todd, about a few different ideas that I've had and that he's had for future episodes. I am very excited to see the progression of Ava because I think it'll be great to tap into what has happened prior to now—what's happened in her childhood that has made her the way that she is.
Do you have a favorite episode of the season that you think fans will enjoy most?
Amirah J: The pilot, obviously, is a very special episode. It's our first one. But my personal favorite is Episode 7. It is a very good one. It's very intense, I would say, but I love that episode. People will definitely be happy with that one, for sure.
