Warning: this article contains SPOILERS for High Potential season 1, episode 13.It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’s Kaitlin Olson leads High Potential as Morgan Gillory, a unique woman with a uniquely high IQ. Morgan, mother of Ava (Amirah J), Elliot (Matthew Lamb), and Chloe, lands a new role as a special consultant of the LAPD. Throughout High Potential season 1, Morgan helps the Major Crimes Division's Lieutenant Selena Soto (Judy Reyes), Detective Adam Karadec (Daniel Sunjata), Daphne Forrester (Javicia Leslie), and Lev “Oz” Ozdil (Deniz Akdeniz) solve cases.

The High Potential episode 13 investigation, however, proves exceptionally difficult. Morgan faces off with a kidnapper who creates intricate puzzles for the police to solve, ranging from a literal jigsaw puzzle to an abstract collection of paintings depicting game pieces from around the world. Though the clues he leaves are whimsical, the kidnapper sets his victims in time-sensitive traps that lead to death if the riddles aren’t decoded in time. Without question, the kidnapper is High Potential’s most dangerous criminal yet. Unfortunately for Morgan, the skill she displayed during the investigation caught his eye.

The High Potential Season 1 Finale Sets Up A Season 2 Continuation

The Serial Kidnapper Is Still On The Loose

Morgan (Kaitlin Olson) and Karadec (Daniel Sunjata) in High Potential season 1, episode 13.

Despite the LAPD playing the kidnapper’s games, the suspect they’d been focusing on turns out to be a red herring. The prime suspect, David Peck, was revealed to be in a rehab facility for months, while the real culprit was posing as him in Oz’s grief group. The LAPD realizes the ploy too late, as the kidnapper adopts a new clean-shaven look and a dramatically different haircut that transforms his appearance. With the police back at square one, High Potential sets him the kidnapper up to be the first recurring villain in the series.

...when the kidnapper returns to High Potential, he’s made it clear that he only has one playmate in mind: Morgan.

Aside from most likely returning in season 2, the aftermath of the episode 13 case will affect the main characters. Oz nearly died and, considering he had just opened up about his father’s death, he may undergo an existential crisis or at the very least PTSD. The kidnapper marks the first High Potential case to go unsolved since Morgan ed the LAPD, which could inspire some increased doubt from higher-ups at the department regarding Morgan’s skill. Plus, when the kidnapper returns to High Potential, he’s made it clear that he only has one playmate in mind: Morgan.

If the kidnapper doesn’t go after the children, they’ll still be severely impacted by Morgan’s involvement in the case. He has plans to “play again” solely with Morgan, but she will end up losing regardless of what games they play. If a civilian dies, she will take on the guilt. Either way, Morgan will be scarred. She will probably win the fight, but she won’t walk away unscathed. However the kidnapper affects Morgan, it will trickle down to her children in High Potential season 2.

How High Potential Season 2 Can Make Morgan's Family More Relevant To Its Story

Even If They Aren't In Danger, The Characters Can Shine

Taran Killam, Amirah J, Matthew Lamb, and Kaitlin Olson as Ludo, Ava, Elliot, and Morgan playing a board game together in High Potential season 1, episode 7 ("One of Us").

While Morgan’s children need bigger roles in High Potential season 2, they don’t necessarily need to be in danger. Ava and Elliot have had small personal plots already, like Ava’s complicated feelings about Roman, Ava secretly going on birth control, and Elliot being ostracized by his classmates for his intelligence. Although their storylines have always been supplemental, High Potential season 2 could bring Ava and Elliot into the forefront or even merge them with the main plots of each episode. In High Potential’s French predecessor, HPI, the children even helped Morgane (Audrey Fleurot) with her investigations.

Highlighting the children could complicate the procedural in interesting ways. Elliot might be great at helping Morgan analyze clues, but involving the kids in Major Crimes cases could further jeopardize Morgan’s future at the LAPD in High Potential. If the children helping Morgan proves too unrealistic, High Potential can still bring Ava and Elliot into the main plots more subtly, like when Ava stumbled into the hostage situation during High Potential episode 7. With so many potential avenues to take, there’s no reason why High Potential can’t make the children a bigger part of the main cast when it returns.
