High Potential season 1 ended with the introduction of a mysterious villain (played by David Giuntoli) who seems as capable as Olson's Morgan Gillroy, except for the fact that he uses his considerable intellectual powers for evil.

This comes through in a crucial moment during the finale, with Giuntoli's anonymous antagonist seemingly being the one to put the life of Oz (Deniz Akdeniz) at risk. The detective is saved before the finale's end. But because of the villain's centrality in the finale, and his apparent connection to Morgan, there are questions about who this new arrival to High Potential might actually be. Based on some recent comments from Akdeniz and Javicia Leslie, who plays Oz's partner, Daphne, there may not be a long wait to find out.

High Potential Season 2 Has 5 More Episodes To Fill

It's A Response To The Show's Success

The adaption garners well over 10 million viewers per episode, when streaming and delayed viewership metrics are taken into , which makes it one of the most-watched titles on television. Because of its continued popularity, actually gaining viewership as the first installment went along, it's no surprise that executives at ABC would be happy to sign off on High Potential season 2 having more episodes.

The show's return is confirmed to have 18 episodes, which is up from 13 episodes for the first season. Considering that the crime drama's debut landed so well with you both critics and audiences, coming in mostly fully formed, despite its shorter runtime, there's a question of how the network hit will approach its supersized second outing and how it will impact the cliffhanger of Morgan's ostensible connection to the unknown bad guy.

It Appears That The Lingering Serial Killer Storyline Will Be Resolved Quickly In High Potential Season 2

A Main Cast Member Offers A Big Hint

In recent comments to TV Insider, previewing what fans can expect from episodes of the new season, Akdeniz made reference to the season 1 finale. The Flight Attendant star noted that Oz wants to get the heart of the matter and capture the sinister killer that's run amuck. Reading between the lines, it does sound like High Potential will address the cliffhanger head-on, rather than allowing it to fester for several episodes.

Akdeniz: There’s a serial killer or a game player out on the loose that we have to really resolve, and I think the start of the season will definitely address that. I think it’s going to be a lot of fun to finally bring that person to justice, considering they put me in the bottom of a pool, which I didn’t appreciate.

Leslie echoes those remarks, stressing that Daphne wants to stick up for her partner. It does not mean that the team behind High Potential will completely resolve Giuntoli's character. But it does point to the fact that, unlike the mystery of Morgan's High Potential ex, Roman, which faded for several episodes at a time, this new villain will be front of mind -- at least to start the season off.

Focusing On A New Story In High Potential Season 2 Keeps It From Getting Stale

The Mystery Should Evolve

Morgan looking shocked in High Potential

High Potential struck a cord with audiences for several reasons, with a major assist going to having the three-time Emmy-nominated Hacks and It's Always Sunny star Olson as the lead. It is also, unlike many other similar shows in which a gifted person helps law enforcement, willing to tinker with its formula. Late in season 1, the show brought in guest stars, went a little dark, and reversed the gimmick that audiences had come to expect.

High Potential can be streamed on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally.

The new episodes don't have a premiere date just yet. But if it hopes to maintain the goodwill that it has built up, maybe even add to it, the pace of this new mystery will be crucial. It does not have to be quickly buttoned up. But it the major reveals only surface a few times each season: playing background to the cases-of-the-week, which tend to vary in quality, it risks making a refreshingly brisk and lively police procedural feel a little bit stale. Surprising the audience by swiftly delivering on big questions, on the other hand. will keep High Potential feeling urgent.
