Following a cryptic message that fans mistakenly perceived as a teaser for the long-awaited Hollow Knight: Silksong, a source close to developer Team Cherry has, at least, confirmed that the game is still in development and progressing towards an eventual release. Originally announced in 2019, as a sequel to the breakout hit Hollow Knight, demos and trailers for the game at that year's E3 gave fans the impression that it would release relatively soon - over five years later.

However, Silksong is still nowhere to be seen, and Team Cherry's near radio silence is starting to spark backlash.

In response to a fan on X, Silksong's Marketing and PR director, Matthew Griffin, also known as "Leth", has said that Silksong "is real, progressing, and will release", confirming that the game is, at the very least, not canceled. Leading up to Griffin's confirmation, he had privately reached out to popular Hollow Knight speedrunner @fireb0rn on X to confirm that the cryptic chocolate cake "teaser" on developer William Pellen's X was not part of any sort of ARG or release date tease, and Griffin has since made follow-up statements on the official Hollow Knight Discord server.

While it might not be of much comfort to fans who've been waiting for Silksong for over five years, Griffin's statement does at least confirm that the game is still a work in progress, even though it doesn't provide much information on Silksong's current state. Effectively, Silksong is now in the same position that it's been in for several years already, that being that the game will be released at some undefined point in the future, and Team Cherry is being especially tight-lipped about when that might be.

After long periods of waiting with no news, Silksong speculation gets wilder each year, with 2025 already starting with a new release rumor.

It should be noted that no direct statements have been made by Pellen, the developer whose X activity was originally mistaken for a Silksong teaser, but Griffin's replies to various fans on the Hollow Knight Discord server have clarified that, at the very least, he was not aware of the Switch 2 announcement ahead of time, and that he's had no with Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, who previously predicted that Silksong would release in 2025.

The Latest Update On Silksong Might Be Too Little, Too Late For Some Fans

Unfortunately, the confirmation that Silksong is "progressing" won't be of much comfort to fans who are still eagerly anticipating the game's release, especially as Griffin's statement provides no tangible updates about the game's progress. There are several theories about Silksong's development and eventual release date, including that Team Cherry had to walk back the chocolate cake teaser due to NDA concerns with Nintendo, but these theories are obviously unconfirmed and should be taken with at least a grain of salt.

Whatever the case, there is, effectively, very little to actually know about Silksong at the current time and no confirmation that the game will make an appearance at any events or showcases. That the game is taking a long time to develop is understandable, especially given the small size of its development team, but some more regular updates regarding Hollow Knight: Silksong would go a long way toward reassuring waiting fans.
